She's at it AGAIN...

Recommended Posts

Well ,if 31 English Channel crossings is not enough, Chloe McCardel is attempting another four crossing at the moment to bring her total to 35. If successful, she will beat the most crossings set by a male at 34 and become the second person in history to reach 35 channel swims behind Alison Streeter, who has 43. There is no way I would swim at night, let alone in open ocean for this long in bloody cold water. I am in awe of her focus and bloody- mindedness.

She has commenced her first crossing. Here's hoping for good luck and four finished.

Maybe not looking correctly, but no Chloe on tracker?

NSF. Chloe is swimming with the Louise Jane. That's the name of the boat escorting her. The tracker is near the bottom of the page. She's currently 2/3 of the way across.

Unfortunately, it appears she has pulled the pin after the first crossing. Looks like the boat has returned straight to Dover.

She's not doing a quadruple Paul. She's doing 4 individual crossings over a few weeks.

According to Flannie's initial post, these swims will be Chloe's 35th to 38th. Is this her second of the four crossings?

No. She'd done 31 prior to last week. This will be 32, 33, 34 & 35.

ETA: finished another.

What I do wonder, with people who do things like this, is what are they getting out of it?  Not the first one you do.  But someone who's now getting up into the 30's.  What is the drive?  To have the crossing record?  It's she paying out of pocket every time she does it, or is she raising funding?  Does she have sponsorship?  The cost to do a crossing just be a bit?  Not a criticism, just wondering.

There are people that just like to push themselves. Why do people on here do IM? They aren't going to win, or to break a record. Many are past their peak, so won't be setting any personal bests. I'm pretty sure Chloe coaches channel swimmers, so I suppose it could also be looked at as "advertising".

Then again, maybe she just loves doing it.

Without wanting to get too philosophical on ya....

Don't we all spend our lives without actually being REALLY good at something? What if you found something that you were outstanding at? Would you spend your time doing it or just letting it slip.  This is an easy question for me as I am not actually good at anything -  more like a  Jack of all trades mediocrity... :(

FWIW - I am definitely no good at swimming !! :)

She was given an exemption as she was trying to break a world record...  'twas in the paper

well that makes sense, corona virus won't infect her as she is trying to break a world record. These exemptions are a joke.

I didn't try to get one, but when I'm out there doing my bit which is a bit more serious than swim the bloody channel, which no one gives a toss about, I think we actually don't take this thing seriously at all

Yep. The exemptions are easy.

I ran at lunch today. Ran past a building site and not one tradie working there had a mask.
the 2 blocks later a bunch of townhouses being built.  None of the brickies had masks.

and finally a tyre business was open and working as usual.

oh I forgot about the 2 guys from a mowing lawn business mowing peoples lawns.

yet I can’t go more than 5km exercising or be out of the house with going to a dr or grocery shopping.

pretty much rules are made to be broken. I don’t see this 6weeks working after what I saw when out today.

Some one swimming the channel is a bloody joke its not needed now. Neither was the stupid host of the masked singer. It's friggin insulting what the exemptions are used for both for travel and QT at home.

I agree.  Given people have had families die overseas (saw one in Germany) and they weren’t granted permission to fly back to be with the family.

Remarkable to have crossed that many times over the years so don't want to take anything away from her for that.  But such a bad look right now - everyone else should be able to travel providing they accept the quarantine/testing requirements should they return.

Again she hasn’t broken any records.

the female record is about 43.

so using the excuse to leave australia to break a record that she didn’t actually break is like what Barry is saying.

I agree with Peter🙄.

We are asking Victorians to live under house arrest, People from the ACT can't go to QLD even though we have no cases, but we grant an exemption for a swim of the channel, which no one even cares about anymore.

If that's the test for an OS trip, I might ask for one so I can do a run

I think the quarantine reference is that coming back from France you're supposed to self quarantine for 14 days and she wasn't required to do that.  I still have a valid entry for a trail race in Austria this weekend (which is still going ahead).  Who should I talk to in the Fed Gov't to get an exemption?

In the UK? or Aus

In the UK.  Apparently the French are pi$$ed the Brits introduced it at short notice.  Having said that it's quarantine at home, no one appears to be checking and fines are minimal compared to Aus.

Absolutely, but it is a strange "record" to claim.

I guess the difference is, Ironman Foz and I don't need exemptions from the rules to do what we've been doing.  Maybe Chloe could have set some sort of record for swimming in Port Phillip Bay instead?  I think what she does is amazing, I just don't know that now is a good time to do it.

But she'd have only had an hour to do it. ;)

That's true, -H-.

I'm not sure when Chloe departed Aust for this swim, what the covid situation was like when she departed, the nature of the exemptions which she applied under, or any of restrictions that the Aust government may have imposed.

I some ways I don't consider it very different from other professional sports (AFL, NRL, netball, etc) being given exemptions and provisions under which to continue, or exemptions being granted in some circumstances for some business travel (which I admittedly know very little about). Her business as a coach is underpinned by her success as a swimmer. I presume she will be undergoing quarantine on her return, as I haven't read anything to the contrary.

That's just how I view it. Certainly doesn't make me "right".

I'm guessing she avoided the bay as it's already been established who is considered the Queen of Port Phillip Bay. ;)
