Trusty steeds - what do you ride?

Recommended Posts

My wifes XS Giant Talon I bought her for her birthday from LBS ($700).  She had an off-putting SheRides experience (too technical, fell off 5 times, busted little finger) so really only does the road bike now - she'd probs do MTB on dirt roads, but not single track.  It's too small for me, so I have the seatpost right up beyond the minimum insert  and bunged a set of $30 MTB cleats on my old tri shoes. May get my own MTB soon, or get a new longer seatpost for hers.

Trek super fly FS 7 with a recent 1x12 eagle GX upgrade. It goes ok when I'm fit. I change tyres to suit conditions/ terrain a lot.

12 Year Old Fuel Ex - pre 29'er days.  Love teh old girl, but prefer riding my wifes Specialized.

Nice RS, I'll be up to borrow that Superfly to take to NZ next month for a week of sweet sweet South Island MTB trails with some mates. Promise I'll look after it better than I do mine.

A review after a year of owning.  It's in the shop for it's first service ATM.

1. Love riding it - don't ride the road bike much these days, if I do mostly on the WT.  Just having a single chainring is great on an MTB.

2. Recently, the chain kept bouncing off.  Turns out the rear derailleur has a clutch mechanism, which you disengage to make everything slacker so easier to get the rear wheel off (the LBS never showed me this 🙄).  Somehow the lever has snapped off & the clutch was stuck in disengaged position = slack chain. $20 for a new lever from Shimano.

3. The forks have gone back to Shimano for a warranty repair (I hope).  They started making a ticking noise at the bottom of their travel.  So no bike for 2 weeks.

4. 1 front (thorn) and 2 rear punctures (rocks, 1 pinch flat = double hole) so far.  MTB tyres are much easier to get off the rim than road bike tyres.
