"What the hell happened?"   We got hustled, that's what happened!

Katz we need to talk

Hey Antisport I'll be luck to get the 1km done in one go, you're way ahead being able to do it twice!

Andrew state and national level medallist 12 year olds would swim 12-12.30. A handful

Haven't swum with Chris for a little while but he can do 10x400 leaving on 5.20 coming in under 5. A 12.30 k would be about his speed. That's about what I can do these days on a good day. At nepean apart from Shane Barrie and Aaron Royle the rest of us were out of the water together.

Yep, slight exaggeration on my part about the juniors. I suspect that at his ITU peak, circa 1997-2002, Macca was good for a sub 12, but his swim dropped dramatically in his last couple of years of ironman - getting dropped at Kona twice, getting out of the water 3 minutes behind (Jacobs?) at Roth. Reckon he wasn't much faster than 13 minutes / km at that point.

Agree - not many triathletes are good for sub 11:30, but you'd need to have at least a 11:40 in your back pocket to hang onto the fast feet in an ITU race these days. Of course Gomez, the Brownless and the odd Russian are exceptional. They'd be around the low 11 minutes ...

I havent swum in almost two years.

If I can remember where the pool is I could smash this.

 I've got to hurry up and get in the pool to set a time so that I have time to do another before the end of March!

I know what will happen.

I will finally find my swim bag and stuff at home, get motivated, head to the pool, get changed, get psyched, spend 10 mins getting slowly into the cold (for me) heated outdoor pool, clean my goggles, take a deep breath.

Perished strap of goggles snaps, and I get out and go home.

Good point. 50m.

In saying that, to grab as many people as possible, put an asterix in for 25mtrs. A double asterix for open water IF you don't have access to a 50m pool.

wetsuits, floaties, pull bouys, bands, flippers, paddles, tow ropes, etc are illegal.

Jet skis?

Well that was exactly what I expected. Haven't swum since early November. The first hundred felt great. Went through just under 1:30. The 2nd hundred was a little tiring but still did about 1:35. From there the shoulders started telling me this was a stupid idea, and that if I ever see OL out riding while I'm in the car, he's going under the front of it.

Scary thing is - that is a 45s improvement in three months

And it is on par with what I was doing at 18...

I should be able to be faster at 30+ than I was when I was squading at 18, right?

Thanks for starting this thread Oompa Loompa I have learnt some interesting things tonight. So I am going to join in for a change ;)

Without going into detail I have been struggling to regain my fitness (and epic slowness) over the past couple of years. And to be honest am/was borderline giving up altogether. I have not done a swim TT since 2010 so I decided to give it a go tonight. I did a quick warm up then 2 x 1k with 45 secs rest between. First one I felt like a dead weight, though that could be put down to over pom-pomming and lugging stuff around yesterday at a trail run. The second felt much better.

Times: (look away now coach@ I don't want you to have a heart attack)

First TT 34:32

Second TT 32.10 and did the second 500 46 seconds faster than the first

So my lessons so far:

Need to learn how to push a bit harder early

Need to trust myself that I can hang-on at distance

I do have different paces... I really thought I had one

Obviously I need to do a 1k warm-up before any race ;)

Anyway thank you. This has helped me a lot. Zoe

And PS if I can get close to Katz time then I will be very happy.

Double PS forgot I am an * it was a 25mt pool. :)

Ok. This I can do.

PB 14min flat in 50M pool.

Swam 14.13 few months ago in 25M. Currently only access to 25M. I'm now 20kg heavier than when I swam my PB.

Training well at the moment, losing weight & planning to smash through 14min barrier soon. Will have a crack in next week or so & post again.

I'm in too. I did a 1k time trial last night at squad but I had a brand new toy I was playing with (910xt) and I think I managed to group 2 intervals, 200m and 1k together. To be fair I will do another TT before squad on Wednesday.

FYI - the time was 20.41m and the distance says it was 1.1km. Based on how I felt I think 1km should have been more like 18m, although both are completely plausible times.

Thanks Oompa!

First TT 34:32

That's not far off 4 minutes for 2 laps of a 50m pool! You must be doing something drastcially wrong with your stroke/technique or is it your fitness? What would you do 100m in flat out? I would suggest either joining a squad or getting some lessons. In the meantime don't plod up and down the pool doing laps, work on your speed i.e do 25/50m sprints, say 20X25m & 10X50m. Work on getting your times down.

Have a look at your workout on Garmin Connect and look at the 50m splits, see if that helps.

I did try that but my only working computer at the moment is my work computer and we can't install any software on them without IT approvals. That means my Ant+ device won't get installed until I go and plead with them or borrow a laptop, trapping my data in my Garmin.

I looked at the individual lap times in my watch and sometime odd was happening there, my shortest lap was 16s, the longest was 1m20. 20mins could be accurate but the week before I think I swam around 19mins and was feeling extremely fatigued.

I can't get in the pool again for a fortnight (new tattoo), but this is the time from before I had it (still this year though).

25m pool too.

22:40 * 25m pool

not sandbagging. I'm just slow.

Yes that is correct, the first one was very slow and I felt like an uncoordinated brick in the water :) . As mentioned I have been struggling to regain my fitness for a couple of years so it definitely is not where it should or could be. My first pool swim was in 2007 and I got halfway down a 25mt pool before I had to grab onto the side so again technique is not the best but has improved.

This session was done in a technique squad. In a 25mt pool. Chatting to the coach before the session he was talking about not reinforcing bad habits and plodding … but also focusing on a couple of areas specific to me. Which is what I tried to do. After the first 1k I took 45 seconds to refocus and find a different gear hence the change in times and the improvement in the last 500 mts.

One of the KEY things I got out of doing this was to remind myself I do have other gears, I can go a little harder without driving too far into oxygen debit (like in sprints) which force me to stop and recover a little. That is I can improve and go faster rather than “just survive” which is the place I have been dwelling in for a while now. For all 3 sports.

100 meters flat out I do not know. I will test it and get back to you. Probably just shy of 3 mins though. The squad sessions that I do include sprints and are run by an excellent coach who got me from 12mt max swim to 3.8k so I am lucky there.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Sounds like you have a coach and squad so just spend more time in the water. Also you might actually find doing breaststroke in races is quicker, until your freestyle gets better. If you have a bad freestyle technique, it's likely you will go slower than you would with a bad breaststroke technique.

Yummy, welcome aboard, why not join in?

Everyone here is doing this to get their times down. Like most of us here, TheAntiSport knows she isn't fast in the water and is taking the challenge to try and improve. She will give this a fair crack whilst working around a busy life and business. She has a coach and does squad showing she's more committed than I am. I'm biting my tongue about the reference to breaststroke ;)

And Cape_Horn (my biggest loser nemesis!), thanks for the spreadsheet. I did one last night which calculated the average time (19:20 from memory), it will be interesting to see how much it drops over a few months.

She might be quicker doing breaststroke!

:) trinube is teasing me about the generous size and the non aerodynamic features of my chest. I haven't seen my feet since I was 17 ;):P

On the suggestion it is definitely a good one for many people for me I can not do much breast (ssshhhh stop giggling trinube) stroke as it puts too much pressure on my lower back and neck and have been advised to avoid it.

For once I am not pleased to be 'above average'.

In other news. I am no longer in the baby lane! Not due to any dramatic increase in my abilities, but because more new people started who just happen to be slower than me!

It's damn fast in the next lane up though. :puke:

In the interests of actually making some gains in this challenge, can you correct my number please? I did it in 22:40, but you have me as 20:40. That might just be my goal!

Sorry. And thanks.

Swim experts: what is the best way to improve a 1km pool TT that will translate to open water? I am assuming swim lots, swim fast will be the answer, but is there anything more specific?

A great way I found to slowly chip away at 1km TT is get a tempo trainer pro. So let’s say for example you swam 16:40 for your 1km (1:40 per 100m) next time set the tempo to beep every 49.5 sec and all you need to do is concentrate on getting to the wall before the next beep. If you achieve this you will have swam 16:30. I am amazed at how poorly people seem to pace themselves. Do you ever see anyone hop in and the first 25 - 50 meters is on world record pace before really slowing down.

The second thing is stroke rate in open water is everything, I know coach rates this second most important to being able to float.

Set it to beep every 25m and you can pace yourself with twice the accuracy.

Doing 100s will help. e.g 10X100m on the 1.30 You'll get used to swimming at a faster speed and it will feel more comfortable.
