Rocket Salad 1,163
So where to now with IM oz? Sydney or Adelaide(its ok)?
Kenny Koala 0
IMA will stay where it is, for the time being. Too many knowns to take a new product away: There IS a Course, Experienced Local Organising Committee, Experienced volunteers and a council (PMHC)that is supportive of and wants the race. WTC will "sex it up" with the tried and true product and then we'll see where it goes in a few years' time. Edited February 1, 2010 by Kenny Koala

alchemy 33
Well judging by the Major Events teams love of claiming regional centres as Melbourne (think MotoGP and UCI World Champs) we wouldn't mind hosting IMA in Geelong under the Melbourne banner We've got the Bellarine Peninsula with multiple redundant roads to the major towns, so one or two road closures would (and are) tolerated. We've got the infrastructure to handle the crowds and Melbourne is close enough to handle any overflow. We've got the waterfront which already handles 70.3 well. And then if they can being it in 2011 then that might be just the right timing for me.

Greyman 675
All I can say is Alchemy is pretty close on the money. Anyway, time will tell and WTC will make their decision all in good time. Few things to note. IMWA has a 30 June entry close off. Why? Not a typo. IMA at Portwill go ahead in 2011, but don't get comfy and think it will be the only IM on the eastern seaboard. Check out how WTC rolled out IM Kentucky a few years back while at the same time assuring IM Arizona, IM North America and IM Lake Placid that there would be no further expansion of IM races in their area. WTC have no qualms about scheduling a race in Oz only a few weeks out from IMNZ. Their main target is Challenge Wanka and the new Challenge race for Australia. Geelong 70.3 deal with IMG is up this year. No confirmation on whether their will be a 70.3 in Geelong next year. TASA and Gold Coast group have already lodged proposals for 70.3 races. TASA didn't get the backing from State govt for this year but are going after it again next year. Don't think they will get support as SA govt is tied up with Tour downunder and Clipsal 500. Make of all that what you will. I haven't done an IM since 2005, Port never really interested me, but after all I've been hearing in the last 3 months, I'm already looking to go round again, a lot closer to home this time. I've been aiming for 2011 for my first half and then 2012/2013 for the full. I'd hate to have mistimed my run by 12 months. It's been lean times down our way with the canceled Challenge race and no local club races. Portarlington and the Harwood Andrews Corporate are the only tris on the calendar (not including TRI-X).... Can someone stop playing that violin, it's making me tear up.
Cottoneyes 1,415
This whole debate is making IMNZ for 2011 look mighty appealing at present...
Greyman 675
Alchemy you may have to travel to either Canberra or Goldy for that 70,3 Either way only two men in OZ right now can help you out where you will be racing in 2011. Nick and Garth Prowd. Nuff said.
TheCam 26
This whole debate is making IMNZ for 2011 look mighty appealing at present... Forget the debate just do NZ.... Its a cracker of an event, everything about it is superior to anything that is offered or could be offered in OZ excluding perhaps the pro start list.

DingoDave 130
TheCam you have glossed over the fact that the place is crawling with Kiwis !! and Taupo is as well if they want to grow IMOZ why would they move it over the southern border ??
ploddingalong 9
What is the water quality like in Albert Park Lake? Could quite easily do the swim there if water quality is ok. Plenty of room for transition and athletes village. Could ride and run south along beach rd.

Yes the place is infested with Kiwi's..... It has taken some practice but I now find them no more irritating than the League loving bogans that infest Port Mac. Also nearly half the field in UnZud is international giving the race a really different but good feel. Taupo as a town is not that bad... IMO it shits on Port Mac any day.... Rotaroua hot springs the day after the race before meltdown is hard to beat...

Not sure but think it is filled with stormwater and road runoff so likely to have high levels of otther stuff in it. I have never heard of swimming events in there but plenty of sailing, rowing etc It is not very wide in the middle either which would impact an ironman size field.

Rotaroua hot springs the day after the race before meltdown is hard to beat... Once you learn that every sentence starts with "Choice Hey Bro" it is easy enough to fit in in Taupo and there as many non Kiwis in the race as there are Kiwis. I find the crowd and atmosphere better in Taupo and starting your day with a clean open water swim shits all over the crowded obstacle course around yachts with semi-portages in PM. Even though I live in Melbourne I wouldn't find a race up and down beach rd very appealing. You would have to have it in Geelong or Frankston if it was based around Melbourne. I wouldn't think the water in Albert Park Lake is anywhere near swimming quality. I don't think you are allowed to swim in it normally and there would be a fairly high concentraton of duck and swan crap. Personally I think give Nick the job of running it in Canberra. Burley Griffin is a reasonably nice swim, plenty of options for a good ride and around the lake is a great location for the run.

Taupo is great, and no need to go to Rotorua for hot pools they are right there in Taupo (De Bretts just of the ride course as you go up the hill) The other serious option is Wanaka, if all everyone is going to moan about WTC vote with you wallet and feet

Waldo the magnificent 18
I was suspended by Trev for posting about Ironman Melbourne yet he leaves gay porn in Tri Chat, as you can see this place has changed from what you use to be able to do, no sandbox with this or suspend or deregister anyone for posting it at the time. 1000 other threads were posted on Ironman Melbourne. 1000 other threads were posted and not merged like he did with Kurnell, his mates post about us dollars and it doesn't go to sand box. We still dont have a seperate forum for cycling, like "the juice" yet we do for lifestyle of triathletes??? Peoples reputations speared with no right of reply, spotted one regular former trannie accused of being a drug cheat, what a disgrace but it stays. I remain the only person suspended for bumping a cycling thread and posting about Ironman, not that Trev moderation isn't consistent, it just depends if you are a "mate" or not. Thanks for the memories people, but I can't cop a forum that doesn't treat all fairly and as its the internet, it doesn't really matter, so asta la vista people and I won't heed the requests to return this time, it was a mistake coming back, always trust your first judgement, get of the internet and train more.
