So something different from Covid talk.

Its coming up to Anzac Day and the 250th Anniversary of Cooks Landing.

Should we think about the relevance and appropriateness of our National Anthem.

In reality the current one is not that old, so its not like it has along and illustrious history.

I like "I am Australian" and I reckon its hard not to get goosebumps when Judith chimes in. Reckon its a better song to belt out than Advance Aust Fair.

What are your thoughts?  Keep it, dump it, change it?

FFS Surely there are more important things going on in society than to waste time on unimportant divisive crap like this.

BTW You're missing the "Who Cares" option

Surely if its divisive then by definition it needs discussion.

I'm just waiting until you realise there's a Lego Masters, hot or not? thread.

That's really going to piss you off.

Just hoping you don't have guns in your house.

Its only divisive because the country is full of self-seeking socio-political groups trying to run stuff their way and who tend to toss the toys out of the cot and start crap like this if they don't get their way.

The date on which "Australia Day" is another.

I am happy to change it and also have some part of it in an Aboriginal language. I think that would be cool.

I like the idea of that, similar to the NZ anthem, but gee the indigenous language is a tough one to get your head and tongue around. The kids would sing a verse of Advance in the indigenous language at school and after all the years hearing it I still had no idea how to sing along.

Which one of the 250 odd different Aboriginal languages do you suggest? Would the other 249 tribes be offended if their language wasn't selected?

And that is your local indigenous language. There are over a dozen different languages currently passed on to young children, and over a hundred still spoken by elders. Some are similar, but others are very different & would not be recognised by indigenous people in other regions of Australia. It would be a nightmare to get agreement on which language to use.

I will let the experts work that one out. Let's ask Stan Grant

All of your choices suck Rox.
In the absence of a compelling option, retain the dirge.

Non issue

It's change for the sake of change, like the republic

Surely even you recognise that an anthem that doesn’t represent the traditional owners is inadequate to say the least..

have the indigenous expressed that the current anthem is offensive ?

Leave it as it is - "Am I ever going to see your face again".  You have no idea how many hours I spent in China last year teaching them the words - too many to go changing it now

"Even me?"  Really?

I'd suggest the first two words are quite inclusive of both the old and the relatively new

More likely a few non-indigenous being offended on their behalf

The fact that the version Aa7 posted exists would say otherwise, I would have thought...

Also, I never liked "For we are young and free".  I think the aboriginal people may object to the "young" part. (and I probably shouldn't mention the "free" part - don't they represent a large proportion of the prison population?)

This whole first owners/traditional owners thing irks me. Where do you draw the line, do we go back 40,000 years ago and find the first tribe who walked across the land bridge, and from that point one everyone else was an invader? The indigenous tribes fought and killed each other over land just like every one else.

That being said I think I am Australian is the perfect anthem and is brings out the emotions. It's a great song with a great message.

I cringe every time I hear Advance Australia Fair and refuse to utter the words. Its terrible. Its a horrible song.

Lets just go with Peter Allens I still call Australia home. At least everyone recognises it.

Might have to change the opening lyrics.

I recon we could tweek it  , just change the line that refers to our country being young.... "we are young". Makes obvious sense and is probably the main sticking point.

Probably the only way to save it from being dumped at some stage in the future. And I'd get rid of "girt by sea" while I'm at it.

We better not mention the second verse, don't want to upset the Greenies lol

And we wonder why we have no traditions of our own.  Its because we do change for the sake of change (usually because some delicate petal is feeling offended).  General observation not specifically related to this topic.

Definition  - Country:

The term country refers to a political state or nation or its territory. It is often referred to as the land of an individual's birth, residence, or citizenship.

Therefore I would suggest we are actually "young".

Oh, I am aware of what the words are trying to refer to.

Also, the anthem doesn't refer to "country" anyway
