I'm guessing the point will ultimately be that NZ is doing better than we are because Jacinda is just wonderful

I'm not actually against what you are saying that it's not working in NZ.

Given the Canterbury Crusaders decided to go and all train together, shows it's not working at a basic level in NZ.

Mind you we dont know what would be the situation would be if they just did what we have done.

My point of you being out of control is saying the same thing over and over and over.

You've made your point.  Move on.

Just watched the news.  Apparently chasing George Pell across 2 States is considered essential travel for our hard working media hacks.

Ironically it was followed shortly afterwards by a story about the number of people who have been fined not not adhering to social distancing and isolation rules and a comment about people still not getting it.

Hypocrites.

Just had a 90 minute Microsoft Teams meeting with my peers, titled "Sundowners". Video & scotch compulsory, work talk not allowed. A great way to launch into an 11 day forced holiday in the current environment.

We're starting to find ways to get around the isolation. Another 6 months could become problematic though.

Veering back towards the future:

Accepting we can take any Chinese figures or results with a grain of salt.

They've just "cleared" Wuhan.

71 days.

<2.5 months.

For the epicentre of it.

Why are we looking at 6 months?

It doesn't make sense to me.

You are 100% correct, the jenie is just about back in the bottle and in some states like wa and nt it is.

All cases again today travel and cruise ships and were already in isolation

NZ has never had more than 100 new cases per day.

Mean Australia has only just had its first day with less than 100 new cases in over three weeks.

Note that the NZ data includes "probable" cases as well as confirmed, while Australia's is only confirmed cases.

Personally I compare Victoria with NZ, we are about the same size. I'd say Vic is doing as well or better than NZ, despite much lower restrictions. We are sitting at only 550 active cases. Pretty encouraging really.

so far, I can't see it has worked in New Zealand, even with the lag.  they have Been racking up more cases than OZ over the past few days.

That's nowhere near correct.

Australia has had over 1150 new cases in the last week. New Zealand has yet to confirm 1000 cases in total.

As at 3pm on 8 April 2020, a total of 6,013 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 50 deaths.

  • Over the past week, there has been an average of 165 new cases reported each day

https://www.health.gov.au/resources/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-at-a-glance

NZ Number of confirmed cases in New Zealand: 969

New in last 24 hours: 26

Last updated 1:00 pm, 8 April 2020.

Seriously pull the trigger.  THEY JUST DON'T SEEM TO FRIGGIN' LEARN

Failing that, can we at least split this thread into 2 - one for those that want to debate the politics of who is best and who knows more than the other's brother's sister in law's neighbour who once walked past Kirribili and heard something, and another for people to share their own experiences which was the original intent of the thread

whatever.  you missed the point.

Which is to be expected when the premise is false.

Remember that Italy, UK, USA, Spain all started with the same handful of cases as Australia and NZ. The big difference is in the timing of isolation and other containment strategies.

If we want to discuss in terms of "performance" per million head of population, I would suggest looking at NZ v Australian mortality* and ICU admissions as that removes much of the uncertainty around whether COVID-19 cases are being picked up, different testing rates etc.

I note currently for COVID-19:

- Deaths per head of population: NZ is 1/10th of that in Australia.

- ICU admissions per head of population: NZ is 1/5th of that in Australia.

I'd say they are doing pretty OK at the moment, but even so they face substantial risk if the foot is taken off the containment brakes too early.

* mortality data for Aust/NZ will be very reliable however for many nations even this data is skewed for various reasons. That said it is probably more reliable than confirmed case numbers. But it is a significant lag indicator.

New Zealand’s cases per mil has been lower than Australia’s every day since this virus 1st apppeared.

No country in the world has regretted going to full lockdown. Plenty of countries in full lockdown have made statements along the lines of they should have gone to full lockdown earlier.

That's some selection bias there. Most countries that have gone into full lock down did so because they didn't catch it early. Of course they wish they could go back in time. What I find interesting is NZ had the virus arrive later than Victoria, went into lockdown but currently aren't doing any better. There is a balance and timing is important and every country's situation is different. I am not saying NZ wouldn't have had more cases if they hadn't gone full lock down, I don't have a crystal ball. But Victoria's response (which is just the Commonwealth response)  appears to have worked well here so far, at a far lower cost.

Not getting in on any side here, but what a lot of people don't realise is that the days referred to on that side are by GMT, and what is shown on the current day's numbers all depends on when in the day a country reports their numbers. Some countries do it hour by hour, some in a single report. It becomes more accurate when you look back at previous days, as they move stats that may be reported one day on to the day that they actually happened. But still according to GMT.

On comparing our numbers against other countries, I wonder what the numbers would look like without the cruise ship fiasco being factored in.  I know we can’t go back in time, but it appears that the majority of deaths and cases are directly linked to the cruise ship.

In NSW perhaps, but there are clusters all over the place from other sources.

Sorry, I thought you were only talking about the one cruise ship (Ruby Princess) - which is linked to 15 out of 50 deaths.  Obviously bad but definitely not the majority.  No deaths in Victoria (where I live) are linked to cruise ships which is probably why I have a different perspective.

We had a cluster on the Monrington Peninsula which was most likely linked to a couple returning from a ski trip in Aspen and not self-isolating, and in Toorak there was a GP who thought he had a cold and kept treating patients.  There was also a wedding cluster from memory.
