CoolRunning Is Closing Down

Recommended Posts

"Well, it's finally come to pass. CoolRunning will close at the end of December.

This decision reflects the declining number of people posting in the forums; increased hosting costs; worsening exchange rate; and decrease in Google's advertising returns.

At its peak, it was hardly possible to go to a race without seeing runners in CR caps, shorts or t-shirts. These sightings often got a mention, and even sighting another CoolRunner outside of a racing context was worthy of a mention.

And who can forget the glorious wars that went on, and on, and on, and on? Characters such as Colin, Ronnie, Bellthorpe and others. There wasn't much moderation, but sometimes the protagonists did end up in the sin bin for a while. Unfortunately, there has been more moderation in the last couple of years, as a small number of bigots decided to make CR an unpleasant place for others, some of whom left permanently.

Kevin Tiller was of course the mainstay of CR for an amazingly long time. It's due to Kevin that the site grew into the massive resource and community that it did. You can read the full history of CoolRunning here.

Every time I run I still wear my CR cap, and often hope that I might once again hear or offer a hearty "Hey, CoolRunner" on the path or trail".

I must admit, I haven't been there in a long long time.  But I did find trannies through it.

Same Goughy.
I think it was a combo of Miners and Plaz that led me down the dark path of Trannies 😱

I wore my CR top during the run leg at Roth.
I still connect to various people I’ve never met thanks to CR, but I haven’t used it in forever.

I mainly went in the ultra and trail parts, and there wasnt much going on. Even UTA was a slog to get 3 or 4 posts that werent mine.

Bummer. I didn’t visit there often but always used the calendar for runs. I did a few Fat Ass races with Kevin and Sean Greenhill being so welcoming.

FM

PS: Just found a Fat Ass photo from 2000. Lost Worlds  of Kuringai run. I am 4th from the right.

I was on CR for years and I learnt so much from them when I first started running 10 years ago. They were so helpful to newcomers and no question was too stupid.

There would often be debate but it was mostly well intentioned.

Then two people started bringing politics into every thread and bullying people who didn't have the same opinions as them. That's when I left. Sad to see it go, but there were fewer and fewer posters...

I think my second reply was a response to a 2004 era thread where the OP asked how long the Bay Run was, the first answer said 7km, I said I've measured it using GPS as a bit longer than that and you may as well take credit for the extra 250m or so, the next post was some guy who did the measuring for various fun runs around sydney, jumping down my throat saying how inaccurate GPS was and my opinion was crap. When I replied to ask how far he thought it was, his value less than 20m different to mine...

Not bitter or anything 🙂

did they have a politics thread

They had a "politically incorrect" thread that was left up way too long. It was shut down and then certain peeps just spread it into all the other threads.

That would have been the first Fatass run in Australia.

About 60-odd km for the full distance. Starting from Berowra, taking the trails down to ferry, across the river and up the hill, then along the trail to the ruins of the Calabash Hotel, and return. Then cross Pacific Highway, railway and freeway and pick up the trail to Apple Tree Bay, Bobbin Head, up to the Sphinx and return to finish at Berowra.

Phil Huegal (green and white shorts) and the short dude peeping over his shoulder were the first to finish.

Honestly didn't know it even existed.

Surely you jest?

If not, you really missed something. It was way bigger than Transitions back in the day.

Nah seriously. Never heard of it but I’ve never been in a running circle.

If I knew, you would have known. 😉

Do we need to have a separate forum here for the displaced Cool Runners?

Have an “undesirables” sub forum, they can go there along with the Vegans, Socialists and Victorians.

It would be a forum I’d never visit.

Yeah I get that, andI would suggest that its not really for an athletic purpose, but you of all people know how much of a social link these places can be.

It's sad! I was a fairly active member for a while when I first got into running. Everyone was always super helpful and nice.

Yep. Lots of help

One of the other sad things when a site closes, is all the content that's lost.  Sure, there can be a tonne of crap mixed in, but generally there is a lot of good stuff too that's gone.

Peter, unfortunately we're all getting old and forgetting stuff.

I've been trawling through some old CR threads to find some race reports that I wrote years ago. I'm finding plenty of content that's been comprehensively obliterated from my memory, from amusing anecdotes and smartarse comments (it's weird laughing at your own jokes), to my own accounts of marathons that I ran as recently as 7 years ago.

Seriously, how do you forget running a marathon? :wheelchair:

Ive forgotten 8 ironmans. You couldnt remember all 50 of yours.

I could list all the ironman distance (or longer) that I've done, though I don't have specific memories that I can assign to every race, especially not for those at Forster and Port Macq where years, times and circumstances become particularly fuzzy. As for shorter tris, no chance. Would be over 300 tris all up.

I can't remember every ultra, especially for races that I've done multiple times. Marathons are a bit blurry too when it comes to domestic events.

Before the beer mile there was the 6ft beer bet.

CR was a huge help with 6ft and the one Fat Ass I did.

It was a great community.

Yes it is. When you're in the middle of it its extremely painful and you don't want to do it again. When it's all over, you forget the pain and want to know when you can do it again! The euphoria at the finish line is also the same!

Though you still know how many children you've had and which ones belong to you?
