Unique things about an IM race

Recommended Posts

In the other thread BarryBevan mentioned how cool the Aid Stations are at IM Arizona.  It got me thinking what’s the unique or cool things about the IM race are you have done. I'm thinking more than just the swim is beautiful etc. What are some of the different things you have noticed at races you have done?

IM Arizona - the themed aid stations were awesome. My fav was the NFL station with big screen TV live score updates and the ppl dressed in football gear

IM Texas - had BBQ & Tacos in the recovery area

IM Louisville - the small town out on the bike course. It had nothing to do with the race but the streets were lined with hay bales & it had a real country fair vibe. My family caught the free shuttle bus out there and spent a few hours. Also, the smell of American BBQ on the bike almost killed me.

IM Cozumel - the drunk supporters who all stagger off the cruise ships and go nuts. The all-inclusive resorts that really bring the IM participants together. Also a dolphin jumping out the water signals the start of the race.

IM Maryland - They really loved the race director he was like a rock star at the event. Unfortunately he died last year. They honoured him in the medal. I also like how they have a competition to design the medal

IM Chattanooga - the food was amazing and the number of military, law enforcement and emergency services ppl supporting the race was impressive

I was going to do Ironman Wisconsin because the run throught the football stadium

So what are the different things you have noticed at races you have completed.

Don’t know if it’s the case at all events, but the first timers welcome from all the check in volunteers was pretty nice at port.

Thinking back, they may have just been trying to drum up cow bell sales

IMNZ at Taupo in the earlier days was if wet the cow shit in the road spray. There were a number of places where the cows crossed the road to milking twice a day. They have tunnels For the cows these days.

Taupo again the Whaka coming onto the beach at Dawn shortly before the swim start.

If I hear that busso will be getting fly swats in the bags at check in then this will be unique and I’ll go round again down there!

at least it will be something useful in the bag of goodies

Hooksie's carbo load challenge at Taupo, pre-Jane – weigh in, eat, weigh again, prizes for male and female with the biggest gain.

Inaugural year meltdowns - Wanaka and Port Elizabeth were wild, but Busselton was in a league all by itself.

Solarberg at Roth - climb through a tunnel of people and sound that would be over the top even at the TdF.

Wanaka - volunteer escort runners along the outlet track, and after dark (began after the race director found a certain back of the packer climbing out of bushes and back onto the road after missing a turn :-).

Ballarat - kids cooking hot dogs on the baking hot asphalt at the bike turnaround.

Penticton - pensioners serenading runners returning on the long, dark, lonely course.

Florianopolis - compulsory dancing through the run aid stations.

Lanzarote - Club La Santa is a triathlon party house for the week.

Korea - scuba divers underneath you, acting as course marshals.

Taiwan (Challenge) - swimmers with noodles and lifebelts.

Klagenfurt - beer kegs at the aid stations.

Then of course there's the 'non-unique' things about IM racing...

The volunteers are pretty much always great and very encouraging.:clapping:

The Finish Line is always fantastic - and the later it gets, the better it is.

And most of all - the fact that IM Athletes always think of new and interesting ways of telling you what IM races they've done! :whistling:

Nice dig but that wasn't my intent for starting this thread. In an other thread I referred to Busso as being "vanilla" the stock standard avg Ironman.  People sooked. It got me thinking what makes different IM special.

If you look at my original post in this thread there are plenty of IM race I have done and left them out because. Well they were nothing special.

I had also forgot about the weir crossing in Port. That is something different.

Was going to mention the tunnel.

Cresting the little hill at Forster and seeing the finish line knowing you are turning right rather than going straight ahead.

MFD at Port.

Hahaha...  Bit defensive there Bored@ .
It's not like I've ever heard you talk about Ironman before :wink1:.

But the whistling emoji was because I'd mentioned some of the races that I'd done myself.

You've got to admit, talking about past IM's is a favourite pastime for many IM finishers.
But then again, I guess this is a triathlon forum .

I have only completed IMs in one location and have 15 HIM/long course at various NSW locations.

The 400 metre finish line shute , down the hill and next to the beach, at Forster was magical.

There were four crocs sunning themselves or floating in the river adjacent to the Highway Crossing last time I was there (June last years); including one light grey coloured 4.5M behemoth. ...

I miss stopping at KFC on the run leg at Forster.

The fish and chips at Port, just didn’t cut it for me.
