From there "live" coverage page:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear athletes,

After consultation with key Government officials, stakeholders and safety agencies as we’ve closely monitored the worsening weather conditions from Typhoon Tapah over the past 48 hours, the decision has been made to cancel IRONMAN Gurye due to significant safety concerns for athletes, volunteers, spectators, and staff.

We strongly advise all participants and their family and friends to stay inside and follow any instructions given by the local government agencies.

While we are disappointed with this outcome, personal safety of all involved remains our highest priority and consideration. We will be sharing further details regarding this cancellation in the next 48 hours as it relates to other items, but again, we urge athletes and their families to focus on personal safety at this time.

For more information, please reach out to us via pm:m.me/IronmanGurye.

Yours sincerely,
Team IRONMAN Gurye and IRONMAN Asia

Omg.  That’s rough.  Some people would have spent a lot to get there and accommodation to sit in a hotel in shit weather.

I feel for those people

I haven’t seen the forecast but if it is correct this is the right move.

You are correct though, bummer and a lot of money down the tube.

Glad its not me. It's a big disappointment for those who have travelled a long way.

What do they do with the Kona slots. Give them to other races?

Wtc go to move should always be do lottery spots for each age group the same way they would have been if there was a race.

But they just won’t do any.

About 5 years ago ironman japan was cancelled due to a natural disaster and the slots went to 70.3 Philippines to keep them in Asia region. And also recently after Japan cancelled they had “japan athletes “ slots at cairns.

Anyways see what happens..maybe to Port Mac as anniversary year.

its right call to cancel and even if you had travelled far and paid heaps you would be happy to be safe.

They will probably do what they did when 70.3 Chongqing was cancelled a couple years ago and do a lottery for them AND offer free entry to another race

Korea used to share hosting with Japan. It's happened twice before when it was on Jeju. Not a complete cancellation but swim was canned twice.

Apparently the slots were given to AWA athletes who had registered for the race

I hope that is just a joke reply? Surely not to AWA?

I hope you are wrong.  Be fair to all that entered. Not the top 5% only.

iFoz... remember China 2008 where we dodged the typhoon by a few days..at least we still got to race, even though the swim was a bit dodgy.

Agree. AWA is a joke. I have been an AWA by simply entering races

That must have been the other Foz.

I haven’t raced in China yet.

Yep Softy. We were very lucky the race went ahead...... Typhoon still present on the Thursday/Friday and slowing down. Woke up on the Saturday to a very very very hot day. 44 degrees on the run.

PS: Christmas is approaching..............look me up in Broulee.
