The course spans the length of the Gold Coast, from Coolangatta Beach in the South, to the iconic cityscape of Surfers Paradise in the North (21.5km).

Yeah, I saw that come up on my FB feed. The first thing I did after seeing it was the shoulder set my physio gave me.

Here's hoping.

I hope it gains a strong following.

With ocean swimming participation growing markedly in the last decade, it's not surprising that there is finally an interest from both organisers and competitors.

I believe there was a new Palm Beach to Shelly Beach 26km (Sydney's northern beaches) staged earlier this year.

I suppose this could develop a big following. With the uncertainty of the Rottnest swim due to sharks, and the popularity of swimming in Qld, it could get big numbers year on year.

I wonder if the Goldie is less sharky?

I'm definitely interested but the date next year doesn't suit me so I hope it goes well and is on again the following year.

why would they limit it to 100 swimmers?

100 solo.

There will be another 100 teams. I suppose being its first year they wanted to limit numbers to check the logistics. It will be a much narrower course than Rottnest, so could see a bit more congestion. This isn't a calm area either. It's a real surf beach at the start & finish, so could you imagine keeping 1000 boats and swimmers safe if there happened to be a 2m surf pumping in?

Per team.

A lot for a 5 km swim. Especially when you still have to organise a boat.

Rottnest is a little shorter, and $1125. I'd have been pissed if my team was one of those pulled from the water last year when some guy said he saw a shark.

Yes expensive but as a one off bucket list but of fun and banter would be good .

If Roxxii dose it though in the team the other three members would get an extra 1.5 k to their name 😂

Each to their own.

For me, doing it as an individual would be bucket list type of event.

Being part of a team would feel a bit like doing a team IM, ie way more expensive than comparable OW swim, cycle or marathon and a sideshow to the main event of the day.

Crewing for a solo swimmer would be fun too.
