Ironman France

Can't read the comments as they're mostly in French, but I can't imagine this is a popular decision.

I’m pretty sure this is the first time an Ironman has ever been shortened due to heat!

I did 2014 with rain in the mountains. I have never seen more bike crashes in my life including the winner Bart Aernouts. He crashed 3 times on the decent to take the win.😰

My little weather app says it will be 32 Saturday, 31 Sunday.

Even if the weather was extreme.... how is cutting 28k's off the bike going to help. and 12 k off the run. If you have got this far through the race another 2 hours isn't going to kill you....one would think.

Don't we sign disclaimers for this type of stuff.

Glad I'm not there doing a 3/4 Ironman.

They were told to shorten it by authorities due to the potential that emergency services may be needed elsewhere to attend to heat related problems within the city. I dont think IM made this decision themselves.

Shark? Or, sting rays in the shallows due to a cold upwelling

Wurf is racing IM France today and backing up next week for Roth. Van Lierde and Cunnama are the two other top seeds. A 30km run might leave Cam with Fresher legs than usual for the last 5km, but it may give the noted runners Van Lierde and Cunnama the incentive to really lay down some hurt. A hilly 150km bik should still see Cam with about 10 minutes lead in T2 I reckon. Should be very interesting.

Through the First 50 Km of the bike and Van Lierde has actually put another 2 minutes on Wurf on top of the 5 minutes gap he had out of T1. Wurf up from 14th into 5th now however.

Either he's dropped out or missed the timing at 62kms

Wurf gone missing at the next checkpoint altogether. Not his day. Maybe finding that there is a difference after all in backing up after actually racing an IM, rather than treating it as a long catered training day ...

His ‘training days’ over the past 2 years still see him routinely breaking the course bike records, so I’m guessing he actually has a physical or mechanical (less likely) problem.

I'm tipping a technical.

Seems to be losing a lot of time on the climbs.

So, do we know what was up with Wurf yet?

Had an ok run, didn't fade...maybe he really held back for Roth?

I think if he was ill he would have pulled out. Maybe taking it extra easy given the heat and Roth next week. Whilst athletes were yo-yoing around him, his effect seemed consistent. That said, certainly a different type of performance than the ‘training days’ he put together over the past 2 years. Maybe Port MAC gave him the confidence that he could really afford to hold back on these type of ‘training days’.

He said somewhere it was a training day as ROTH is his aim (after Kona)

He didn't need to win France or even get a spot.  he just wanted a catered training day.

Next week is the real test.

Meanwhile, Aussie Carrie Lester won the women's race.

That makes sense except for the fact that in every other catered training day event he’s down to date he’s come off the bike with a 10 minutes lead. He was never out of second year yesterday. So, even if it was planned, there clearly had been a change of plans since last year regarding these type of races.

Maybe he really was holding  his shit back till next week? Can we expect a whole new level from him at Roth?
