The rumours were true

Sad to see a 25-ish year old race finish up

If true this is indeed sad.

Yes, cancelled. I saw a copy of an email advising it is cancelled - “due to a change in business circumstances “.

Hey Flanny - do you have the email or can you post an extract that confirms this- I need something concrete. I tried ringing them  but they are not taking calls and recommend sending an email, which I have done, but I am not expecting a prompt reply.

Yah. Thankfully we could cancel our accommodation without a fee and we hadn't booked flights yet for our babysitters (grandparents).

There doesn't appear to be any other half distance options other than Ironman Geelong or challenge Melbourne which are all next year. Although I'd be hesitant to sign up for challenge Melbourne now.

So can it still be run? Can a good Samaritan step in and save the day? Is it even possible? What would it take?

Yes, but I think it's going to be run by someone else and will still go ahead. Council still support it is my understanding.

I would expect it would struggle without m-dot/challenge branding

history is bleak for indep half distance races in Vic eg torquay, sufferfest etc

Challenge won't allow its events to be contracted by teams associated with IM. That what happened to Challenge Cairns in 2012, the team that ran it was bought by IM only a few months prior to the race. Challenge said no way, thus IM Cairns. So someone else may run it as a Challenge event or IM may appear with a new IM Shep or the race or it may be independent. Who runs Challenge Melbourne? They may be completely independent but if they have anything to do with IM I imagine it will go.

It's already been done. They've cancelled the "Challenge" part of Shep so they can announce Ironman. Same goes for Melbourne.

TBH I don't give a sh!t if its going to cost another $50, so long as the Shep and Melb races go ahead. If they are IM run that will be awesome

I call bullshit.

Western sydney is the week after isnt it?  No chance ironman would run 2 back to back so close.

Wonder when the ACCC gets involved regarding anti competitive behaviour.

LOL 😂. The accc.  Funny one.

They are still looking into why petrol can go up 60cents a ltr yet crude stays the same price.

Yeah but this would be an easy one for them and a soft target.

I wonder if that’s why these events weren’t included in the original sale.

Probably inflated the price for the other events with a whispered agreement to walk away from the other events so Ironman could then “save the day”  and do the sporting community a favour when in fact they are just monopolising by stealth.

Is that a decent conspiracy theory?

Signed up for Geelong instead. Got an apartment throwing distance to the start of the race. That'll do

They run Port and Busso on the same weekend. Operationally they will be fine.

Yes, but with the rumoured new ‘sydney office’ using Fairfax staff, the same model could still apply. Say they run one year with the date clash due to permits etc already in place for 2019, they can they change dates for next season and space out better.

Let's park this until an announcement is made.

NOTE:  I'd bloody love Shep to be an Ironman 70.3

I'd be ecstatic if the old Challenge Melbourne became Melbourne Ironman 70.3

Why does it have to be Challenge or Ironman?

QLD has 5 long course races and only 1 of them is Ironman.

Goodiwindi HOTW

Tweed Enduro

Yeppoon Kracken

70.3 Sunny Coast

Hervey Bay 100

I think that the country races are better as well as half the price.

I hope that Shep keeps going to for you guys.

Because the total number of athletes for the 4 above wouldnt even match up with Ironman sunny coast.

People want the Cole / Woolworths version not the IGA/Corner store

Bahahahahaha Pieman.

Hey Pete do you have time to crunch the numbers on the 4 races combined to Sunny Coast 70.3 numbers?  You are the man on all of this stuff.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that it is very difficult at this point in time for a non IM branded 70.3 distance to survive or to have anywhere near the entry numbers that IM branded events attract.

Sure you can maybe do a couple of years but with little dollar return and a huge workload it soon becomes unviable.

Clubs or associations running events relay on cheap or volunteer labour which in turn causes burnout in a short period of time.

We have been through this in WA.

For some reason a vast majority of the entrants somehow think that the IM brand adds credibility even if they arnt attracted to qualifying spots. This is in the end the demise of private 70.3 distance events.

Lots of us say we would support a private race but there are not enough of us saying or doing that to make it viable.

New people to the sport are dazzeled by the IM promotion so that's where they go.

In WA we now have 2 IM 70.3s cannibilising each other with the advent of the December event taking numbers away from the May event run by TWA.

Sure, its not the only reason numbers are down but its a fact that lots of people wont do 2 in a season and despite the fact that the May event is 33 years old people don't always support it because they choose December at the start of the season.

In my opinion as a competitor in December for the 70.3 we really were considered very much just an add on to the Ironman as second class citizens.

The May event as a stand alone 70.3 its all about just those competitors.
