He would be a chance in Cork, but I doubt he would go top 10 in Kona this year. I reckon he'd be silly to take the spot if he got it. Unless he's been hanging out in Spain over the Summer it would be a waste of his time.

Interesting Gomez is now back on the WTS circuit racing and getting ready for the Olympics while Brownlee decides to do Ironman.

Do we think Either will make the podium at the Olympics or at Kona?

Considering his 2nd place in South Africa was done with limited training, I would say if he can cope with the heat then yup. Podium.

Peter, Jan just got his mojo back for Kona if Ali makes it. PS - I think this is a celebrity roll around with a DNF 5km into run.

Didn’t someone on this site. Say he would never race Ironman because he’s too injury prone.

People have said it.  But search isn’t finding them.

Pretty sure it was IP and AP.

I think it was because he can’t handle the heat......so I thought someone said. That seems to have been proven thus far at Olympic level at least.

Jeez decent start list for one slot!

I’m stopped over in Singapore airport right now. Had planned to race Staffordshire 70.3 this weekend but unfortunately my foot flared up this morning so made the call to just go straight on another plane to Girona when I land in London and give it a few days off running and get a bit more training in. Cork was always the more important race. Excited to race a good, solid course with against some strong guys.

Love to see ab do kona

I would too, however I reckon he'd be worse in the heat than Macca. I don't think he will ever win Kona somehow...

Yeah, Macca couldn't handle the heat in Kona.

AB has said in a few interviews that the heat gets to him. Not a great fan of the B’s but he would add to the hype for Kona (another story).

Maybe he'll need a lay down in the Energy Lab.

I can't warm to them either. I'm not sure what it is. I don't hope he DNF's though. I hope he races really well and pushes someone else to a stunning performance to win.

But I don't think he'll race Kona this year, and I just don't think he'll be able to win it ever.

ps: Don't forget to mark this post & quote it when he does win it. :)

I think we all recall him suffering in the heat in a World Cup race...... how is it so!

I hope he takes to the longer distance well, and becomes a genuine challenger for years to come.

70.3 worlds was an amazing race, with 3 genuine greats going head to head. I want that replicated in Kona. Whether he will or not is a different story.

There is real potential for the next couple of years to be one of the greatest periods ever - with Frodeno, Lange,  Sanders, Wurf all having a genuine shot if the cards fall right. Add in Brownlee, Gomez (post olympics) and wildcards like Tim Don, Ben Hoffman, Torrenzo, Keinle, McNamee, e should be licking our lips at the possibilities rather than hoping people fall flat. Thats a juicy field.

And Torrenzo is a little behind now too.

I don't think Torrenzo, Keinle and Don got worse or are past their best, everyone else just got better and are pushing the envelope.

44th place at ITU in Leeds so surely he and JB (35th) are on the way out of short course now...

Jake B with the win...

Never, ever expected them both to finish so far back when starting a race healthy. The New Generation are here. (except Javi, he unbelievably just keeps on keeping on)

He jogged out to 35 as he has an IM in 2 weeks, lets not write him off just yet

The guy with the IM coming up was 44th by the way. Also my god, if he had a sniff of a top place he would have taken it. He actually tried but looked terrible on the run before he was dropped.

Ali was 44th, isn't he the one we are discussing racing an IM?

Yeah I think someone was thinking he means 35th instead of 35mins?

If he ran 35mins for the 10km, them he was either injured or holding back. His OD run PB is something like 28mins.

Holding back not peaking for this. He is a 2 time Olympic gold medallist.

He’s doing an I’m and he is an absolute champion.

Yes he came 44 and ran 35

not on this course he doesn't his first win here he ran 31.10, his second win 31.25

last night race was the fastest in Leeds yet, the run Birtwhistle did was 30.21.

Yes he is an olympic champion who is supposedly doing an IM in a couple of weeks, but he is also a brit saying he wanted to see how he would go in qualifying for Olympics, he was obviously having a go, probably eased up a bit when dropped way out of contention. If he could have won it or podiumed he would have.
