ITU multisport swim shortened

Recommended Posts

From a Facebook page.

The swim course has been reduced to 1.5km due to the water temperature, to ensure the safety of all our athletes.

Official air temperature: 9 degrees Celsius.
Official water temperature: 14.1 degrees Celsius.

Seriously why do the organisers persist in holding these events at locations where the swim will ultimately by cancelled or shortened? It seems to happen way too often and yet these scenarios are totally predictable.

I've only done one ITU world champs when it was in Mexico a few years ago. One of the reasons I chose that is cos I knew the swim wouldn't get cancelled. Pretty sure it's happened before in Vegas for a 70.3 worlds, Canada from memory, now Spain.

Rotterdam was Very Very cold in 2017.

Switzerland thus year won't exactly be tropical water

Is it Bermuda 2020? That'll be nice.

I read booties were allowed for the earlier races.

Now THAT'S more like it.

Out of curiosity I looked up the average air and water temperatures for Pontevedra in May. And the current conditions are pretty normal.

I also looked up Taupo in November. I predict a shortened swim there too.

No it wasn't.

I wore a skimpy trisuit and nothing else all day and was fine. Just wish we had been allowed to swim a little before the jump in the water as that was a rude awakening to the face...

I meant the water was cold.  I thought it was.  Not as cold as pontevedra though.

The day before was cold up top, for the practice ride. But race day.was perfect.

Thought we were talking about the water, and the shortened swim.

And with cross tri, aquathlon, long course and aquabike, there will be plenty of warm swimming!

Taupo is a great location but even the first week of March (for IMNZ) can be sketchy weather wise. The lake will still be freezing in November.

I reckon that mid February would be the best time. Only problem with that is that it means that northern hemisphere athletes would have to train through winter, which WTC wouldn’t allow because at the end of the day it’s a money making machine and they wouldn’t want to do anything (like make the event unviable for 80% of their target market) to jeopardise their profit margin.

They should have had the 70.3 WC in Busso - 2 or 3 weeks before IMWA.

While Lausanne won't be tropical water, at this time of the year it should be anything between 20 and 24 degrees, so not too bad.

Yes, my friend did it last year, she said it was warm and air temperature was very warm.
