Challenge Melbourne 2019

Recommended Posts

So whos in? I must admit the whole approach from Challenge seems very half arsed compared to Iron-man. Not a single email notification that the event is even coming up, no information PDF booklet, and when you go to the website is a disgrace-the front page has one section referencing the 2017 Championship, and then another talking about how 2018 is the return to St Kilda. Hopefully the race is run a little better than their I.T department...?

Bahahahaha.  Must be a laid back race director.  I don't need any of that fancy stuff.  Just want a race.  See ya there.

Its a shame if they cant even be bothered to advertise the correct dates-how many potential participants have not signed up due to thinking the race isnt even on?

Their instagram post sends you to the webpage that has all the info and athlete guide.  Current 2019 info.

http://www.challengemelbourne.com.au/

I read it that the other boxes to the right are the highlights f the last couple of years.

2018 did see the return to St Kilda.

But agreed - an email to participants with the booklet is something I would expect.

Nope, you are being to generous. It clearly hasn't been updated.

"2018 sees Challenge Melbourne return to Melbourne’s favourite Triathlon location" If it was talking past tense it would have said '2018 saw Challenge return..'

And why on earth would they be talking about people qualifying for the 2017 Championship...especially when you click the link it takes you to the 2019 info. Its all over the shop, just very lazy admin.

True. I didn't look that deep.

Hope the race is better run. Last year's bananas anyone?

Missed last years race so missed the dodgy bananas. Did the previous races and all of those were good, even in testing conditions. I will let you know at 6.50 am Sunday morning if I'm competing.

As far as the SME360, With the neglect of their race webpage, one could naturally think they were cutting corners. However, looking at the vast portfolio of races and events SME360 are running, I think they are spreading themselves a bit thin. In the search for a better fiscal bottom line, they are forgetting the basics like webpages, which ends up losing customers (race competitors).

No name brand...that's charging a brand name price?

I'm not expecting much, but I'm disappointed as like all of us we want this sport to grow. It's embarassing when friends and family who want to come watch go to the website and get confused about if the event is even on.

You could always pay $220 for a 110km ride in Brisbane this week

https://www.tourdebrisbane.org/rides/uci-gran-fondo

how do they get away with that??

I think so but, for example, includes Coot-Tha which is open all the time anyway.

Best of luck More, Blobby, PJ and any others racing. Enjoy your day.

Just remember.... if there's no report or photos - it didn't happen.

Proof reading not their strong point.

Then again, not many are good at that.

Or has Australia finally realised that if wants a prime minister and a rugby team the it should become NZ’s West Island

Hope you're better. I had a stint at the hospital (salmonella) . Involved an IV drip, two specialist consults and lecture from the doctor. Kept telling me I have to eat food. FFS anyone who knows me, knows I don't need those instructions.

There are going to be some seriously impressive times tomorrow.

With the fast road surface and no wind. Omg.

We could see a sub 330 in the men’s

I have just been down to watch a bit of this race. Draft fest of course... but i just saw the most bizarre thing i have ever seen during a triathlon.

On the run course near the Elwood turn around, there is a boat ramp. A technical official just allowed someone to back a jet ski down the boat ramp, which meant backing across the run course. The driver couldn't reverse properly, and ended up stationary across the running path. The official then had to instruct the runners to go around the car.

Will try to post a photo later.

Ok so race report time!!

In summary despite my concerns it was a very well run event and the goodies you got were much better than Geelong, a nice 2XU singlet, the mandatory towel and a beer stein!! Nice!

So to the race. My swim was atrocious, just couldnt get in the rythym and sighting was very ordinary. Was pretty disappointed to see Strava had 2.1ks but looking at other people's results it seems the course was long which made me feel a little better. Going under the bridge was kinda cool. Did a 47 😳

The ride was awesome, roads like glass and not much really in the way of hills. I was feeling good so basically threw the power metre plan out the window and thought I'd just push it and worry about blowing up later lol. Did a 2:41 which I was pretty happy with.

Then onto the run. Was actually feeling pretty good for the first 10 averaging around 5m ks, again i threw the heart rate monitor out the window and thought I'd just go by feel and worry about blowing up later. On to the second loop and started to hurt, definately slowed down but still managed to hold it together for a 1:50 which I was happy with.

All though this race was easier than Geelong in that it wasn't as hot, the roads were better and flatter I think my nutrition was also a lot better. I bumped the carbs up and felt pretty good.

All in all an awesome event that I'm looking forward to next year.

How did PJ go?

Finished with the professionals be that 9 minutes behind the winner.

I think that’s a great result for him. Wonder if he thinks the same.

Is the david that came second the former football player?

I’ve always thought for both Challenge Melb in April and Busso in May, this plays a part

Perhaps someone more well versed in the field can chime in?

I thought that too.

He was pretty honest about things, knew his bike was the big weakness of the day, but hopeful he could build on that.

I think he could maintain a nice little life doing regional Half races if he wanted.
