What do you not "get"?

Recommended Posts

Yeah Oompa, kind of where I was coming from.  I really fail to see a need for universities (especially bricks and mortar type) beyond medicines and some sciences in this day and age.  I see way too many graduates in Business and Humanities get into the work force and are not prepared / not able to put the learning into the real world.  Time for more of these 'students' to be doing apprenticeships, learning 80% on the job and 20% in the virtual classroom.

Even the medicines would be better placed with the classrooms in hospitals - imagine the boon to society if the university campuses were retrofitted to medical facilities for the low care requirement / non life threatening type of patients and cases

So true, would love to go to the universities and modernise it, bring in efficiency.  It’s a time warp from the 1800’s in many ways.  Can remember Turnbull talking about bringing it into the modern age  but he didn’t take it on when on government.

Maybe I come at it from different angle having worked full time with overtime  and gone to uni full time at the same time  but was always amazed how inefficient it was.... and with the technology age, suspect we should just sell them all off and go virtual.

Full time 9 to 5 with overtime and full time uni load

Just like Ninewells Hospital at the University of Dundee? These places already exist, CE.

I like MasterChef, but because the contestants can actually cook (mostly).  For the same reason I enjoyed So You Think You Can Dance, just awesome skills.  I've never watched MKR, why watch people fail to prepare one dinner they've had all the time to practise for.  And every time I see an ad for MAFS, I have to scream at the TV, "they're not actually f'n married!"  Always loved Bondi Rescue.

Apart from triathlon we all have something "on the side" that keeps us busy or happy and they are generally very different.

What do you see others doing and say "I just don't get it"

I dont really "get" fishing. Maybe I'm impatient, maybe its because I don't really eat fish, and am not overly keen on unnecessarily hurting something. I have tried. Guys a work think I'm nuts as I can walk to the bay near me, and many go fishing there, rather successfully, but I just don't "get" it.

I don't get fishing either .... for me, it is trying to outsmart a fish. I used to go fishing with my Dad and I hated it (loved spending time with him, but the activity of fishing????). I only used to go so that I could swim into shore when we had pulled the lines and were heading home.

Steephill & their bloody "Non-Spoiler" mode.

Check the 2nd bottom video title in the screenshot.

image.png.24d38c5c80490d3393707d60e886fccb.png

The fact that half the video's also start with the last frame frozen for a couple seconds before reverting to the start usually means if you don't cover the screen as the video starts you see the winner as he crosses the line before the video starts.

Agree.. I dont get politics generally... the whole blue/red left vs right thing... I have voted for a number of different parties in previous life all based on who I thought was going to do the least damage. I guess I dont get the ideological side of it all then...

Glad I dont vote anymore...

That's why I said "that many" instead of "any!"  I allowed for there to be a few as I knew there'd have to be some.  I just didn't know specifically who they'd be.

I read recently, a story about the fear of socialism.  But that the most satisfied people come from countries that are capitalist with the right dose of socialism.  Like those two you mentioned.

Finland?

Finland is awesome .... I went clubbing in Helsinki after work one night and .... let me just say .... the hospitality shown was first class!

I woke up in a bedroom in a town called Kotka, about 10 miles from the Russian border and my host gave me a lift back to the airport. I missed work that day, but cannot fault how hospitable they are!

Because they have more impact on my life than the state politicians, they are more accountable to

Don't know but in our family we pay a lot of tax, and then private fee as well, I'm not feeling allot of value out of either

Cyclists shaving their legs

You do it and you won't be able to keep your wife away from you.

But when you crash and the hair grips the road and rips skin off, you'll wish you shaved so you slid.

Our kids state school is generally considered the best school in town for girls to go to for results.  I think last year the most expensive girls school up here beat the girls results, but that's not usually the case.  Granted the school has a pretty good catchment area, with not a lot of lower socio economic areas and some of the wealthiest sections of town.

lol nah, I did it for Geelong and she was weirded out by it..we both were actually. Just felt and looked...weird.

When you hit the asphalt I'm not sure the friction of hair is going to make much of a difference as to how much skin gets pulled off? Though I have heard it helps with the clean up...but then geez how often are guys crashing their bikes to necessitate this?

If it was linked to personal risk, then police and paramedics would presumably be on similar money (as another poster suggested)?

Its not the industry wage, its a one off for that project. As I said I assume its an incentive from the developer to get the job finished on time.

Good luck them I suppose. In the end for that to be viable someone else obviously stands to make a lot more.

Beats what a lot of carpenters get when the developer/building company closes doors and doesn't pay them, then starts up again under a different name. It's happened to a chippy living near me 3 times in the past 5 years. All up he's been done for nearly $100k.

Sounds a bit like that deal negotiated with the train drivers during the Commonwealth Games - ie extra payment to reduce absenteeism.

A cynic might question why an employee might expect an extra payment to do what is already in his/her job description?

The rollout, and the technologies selected has nothing to do with Telstra. We just did some of the designs as one of the contractors, and sold over the copper & HFC Networks to be used.

The NBN website originally said my place would be ready in 2016. Then it went to 2018. Just last month it was saying I would have Fixed Wireless in July 2019. Now it's saying I will have it in 2020, but won't say what technology.
