40 Kona spots by just entering. WTF?

Recommended Posts

Qualifying has never been so easy.

Quote
Dear Peter,
Is IRONMAN World Championship at Kona on your bucket list? Well, this is your chance to get to the big dance on the Big Island of Hawaii in Oct 2019.

Just be registered for any full distance 2019 IRONMAN Oceania event and you'll be entered to win one of 40 slots. The winners will be randomly selected over three draws between now and Jan 23, 2019 ....

Draw 1 - 10 slots for all IRONMAN registrations through to Dec 10, 2018
Draw 2 - 10 slots - for all IRONMAN registrations through to Dec 24, 2018
Draw 3 - 20 slots - for all IRONMAN registrations through to Jan 21, 2019

So if you're sitting on the fence, now's the time to make your New Year's commitment... a decision that could see you toe the start line at the greatest triathlon of them all.

Pfffft 40 spots out of how many thousands of entries. Even if you win a spot it would feel so lame lining up against everyone else who earned their spot.

Why don't they instead raffle free flights or accommodation etc

You still have to pay the $1000 entry fee to Kona if you WIN.

You actually only win the link to enter.

And I think you’d have about 40 in 800 chance to win.

I would unashamedly take this if I was to win one of the spots.

While the ideal is obviously to qualify, I doubt there would be many people on here that if push came to shove and were offered this opportunity would actually knock it back.

See I would have thought it's shortening again.

With the lower numbers overall and increased costs, how many people still keep going and end up with 13+ Ironmans (Including the 3 years of 'waiting' where you still have to do a race a year)?

Nope, still don't care for it. Plenty of better races and locations to spend my hard earned cash.

Nope. Plenty of cashed up ppl looking to go. At IM Maryland there was a guy trying to do as many races as he could in the year just to get to his legacy spot. Plenty of old timers sitting on 8 or 9 races who thought they would never get to race Kona have also got back into the sport.

They doubled the number of Legacy spots last year to try and clear some of the back log.

The email is a bit misleading. It is 40 slots available to entries for every Full Ironman worldwide, not just the 4 Oceania races. The odds wouldn't be much better than the old lottery.

Plus you can enter the draw by sending a postcard.

I get the impression it's 40 spots from early entries to any 2019 Full Distance IM race anywhere in the world.

I guess if you were planning on entering one by 21/01/19 anyway then you've got nothing to lose.

Yeah. But that’s not what the email I got said.

But have seen another saying what you are saying on ironman .com

so basically ironman Oceania is false advertising with their email.

I'm sure they'll argue it's not false, just a typo I guess. Street will anthing is possible with Ironman grammar.

Im not selfish enough to do another ironman.

I'm with you, though I'd go on no training and maybe have a sit down

Simple answer - we will find out in the next 24 hours, when the first drawing is announced.

First draw for 10 slots was 13th December ...... went looking for a list

Found this instead :rolleyes1:

As per T & C's

"If you’re the curious type, and would like to know who the Selected Athletes are, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, making a request to receive such information, to: “2019 Kona Dreamin’ Recipient List Request, c/o World Triathlon Corporation, 3407 West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Suite 100, Tampa, Florida 33607”. Such requests must be received by June 7, 2019."

That's poor process and doesn't instil much transparency.  How much easier for them and the interested athletes to have 1 person provide the answer, instead of having many people ask, the waste of postage and the time taken to print the list, put it in each envelope and then post.

Hopefully they have better processes in other areas of the business, no wonder its expensive to run an ironman.

And sounds like you won't get your response till June next year.

I reckon its a trick.

If you send in an request to know the winners I reckon you will get a spot.   C'mon, there wont be more than 40 people who write in will there?

I'm sure this probably has something to do with the lottery laws in Florida, but gee its sounds dodgy as.

No, and I haven’t got my confirmation email yet, so they must be off over the holiday break.
