If you've done a 13 hour Ironman tell me why.

Recommended Posts

Huh, the same year I probably won't be doing one!

This thread makes me want to do an IM so badly, just so I can respond to the question with "why not?"

I'll respond for you Goughy…   Why not?

I've gone over 13 hours, and I've also gone under 10 hours & done Kona etc.

I thought going over 13 was better!

That is all .

Hello Mrs Turtle, yes it's been a while, I hope everyone's well.  I've got a couple of mates racing in Kona and thought I'd log on to see how they were travelling.  You know that I can't resist a good 13 Hour IM thread!  :boxed:

Might take me a while to catch up on things...  Don't suppose you want to give me the one minute version?

Every body played nice and we all got along without controversy. Not a bad word was said about anyone. Not even those unfortunate enough to accidentally break a rule.

The End.

When did they extend the cutoff to 13 hours ?

If you ever went to Kona youd know they give you 17.

After Yoyo got the Shiv he dropped Macca faster than a rat down a drain pipe

Isn’t Macca rolling around on a BMC these days?

I think Niseko approved of those, if not certain middle eastern values...

ok I will admit -

My first IM 13.05 at 43yrs old

Did 6 more all under 13hrs

PB on my 7th go at 50yrs old - 11.29

Now 54.. not as fit as at 50 but never say never doing another one day... hmmmm..

My motto always was.. race to finish and a good time is a bonus and DNFs are not in my mind EVER.

Your assumption on why this question was asked is wrong. The idea was to highlight the different angles everyone is coming from and to identify that not everyone values the same things equally.

So you saying it's a stupid question is a stupid statement.....from my perspective.

No, it's a stupid question. Sit back, think about what you want to know and the information you want to draw out of the forums audience. Then write it down and read it. Look and see if it can be worded better. Frame your thoughts on what you want to find out and the result you are seeking.

Going by your explanatory statement in your response above, it would appear you are looking for several different items that you want people to respond too. By presenting them in a bullet point format you could focus responses even more. It could even be worth a poll which can present a data format which may assist you in using the information you see requesting.

Then your question may not appear so stupid.

Kona was my longest IM with a 6 hr marathon- walked the entire 42.2 k with a femoral stress fracture.

Had an absolute blast and wouldn’t change a thing.

Met up with Plugga and walked the final km together over the finish line.

Spent a lot of time interacting with the crowd and thanking volunteers - memories that will last a life time.

i will add that walking a marathon hurt a lot more than running- and I admire all those competitors that are out on the course up until cut off.

Had always wanted to go back and run the Queen K but my racing days are long gone.

So, the finish time will suck. I am ok with that. I'm just glad I will be there doing something I love (though hate with a passion at the time), with a motley crew of misfits (that's you lot) behind me in both person and in spirit.

I am ok with that. I love this bit. - My view is you need to just do it and be happy with your result assuming you can assess why you got the result.

Too many people dwell on the would'a, could'a, should'a!!!!

Have a great race , enjoy it and surprise yourself!!!!

OK - so that personal commitment I thought I had on the June long weeeknd next year is actually ... on the following weekend. Which should rule IM Cairns back into the picture BUT the Minister for War and Finance’s initial reaction is, and I quote: “there is no f#*king way we are going back to Cairns next year”. ... I guess there will be a lot of negotiation and massaging in Chez Andrew over summer ... #Anthingispossible 😂

An old friend said, if you have to walk, do it with purpose. Not like you've surrendered.

This.

I've walked what felt like half the marathon in two IMs. Still respectable times if you don't walk slow.

This is an extract of my IM report from this year. 'Walking with purpose'  was the biggest factor in me finishing the run portion 35 mins faster than the previous year.

Back into town and I walk a lot of the little rises in town, they sap your spirit because the come after a 90 deg turn all the time, so you lose momentum. This time I perked up, looked at the crowd etc.  On every lap at a quite hilly bit in town, there is always one guy from IM, he was there last year, he encourages everyone and stands on his own.  I think he's a coach and he said to me 'look at that, walking  with real purpose, even on your last lap'. that made me happy as I knew I wasn't death shuffling.

Yep, do it with purpose. Walking is just a tool in the kit. When you're going up a hill and running as fast as you can walk, then walk. It's a good way to deal with nutrition issues too. I ran out of gas on the run at Busso, walked a couple of k's, ate what looked good and recovered. Ended up with my third best IM finish (but still more than 13 hours – 13:19 :-).
