I grabbed some for $1 a punnet last week.

At that price I’ll risk getting a prick in my mouth.

Strawberry's are a daily item in my kids school lunchboxes - they love them, and although i think we will be OK up here in the Pilbara, i still chopped them up into quarters last night for the kiddos.

What knob would do such a thing and stick needles in them.  i hope they are caught asap.

I'm glad I'm growing my own. It really is sick, as these are definitely a favourites for kids, so they'd have to know who they were endangering.

And now there will be folks adding their own needles, and putting it on SM as a victim.

I heard an interesting conspiracy theory from a green grocer today. He says this started as a ploy from within the industry. A lot of farms are still picking & selling as many strawberries as they normally do, and getting as much if not more than they get from the big buyers. They'll be back on the market soon, and will be attracting record prices due to the shortage brought about buy the dumping we all saw on the news.

I can at least attest to the selling. My community FB group has 3 different farms advertising their wares at between $2/kg & $3/kg, and 1 is even limiting what you can buy because their pickers couldn't keep up with the demand over the last 2 days.

Edit to add: A little bit of google showed a few articles from August that showed farmers in SEQ  dumping tonnes of strawberries due to the glut of fruit, and the major buyers not accepting anything but the top quality. Seems this way they may get compensated in part for their losses.

I'll put my alfoil hat back on now.

What we are wondering is they have only been found in fruit? How about doing the kids a favour and putting a few in brussel sprouts!

They are now selling them from the farms at $10 a tray, pick your own. So they are doing away with labour costs, and selling them for what they would have got from Woolies or Coles. Good business at the moment.

The small guys are suffering, but these big farms are doing better than they would have without the needles.
