Agree..

I opened that hoping it was Elle McPherson

Oh. Sorry for the confusion.

I've got a few gripes with this person. Was in a minor bingle with a car not long ago, she admitted riding at night with no lights. Bike was a write off, so she started a GoFundMe page to get a new bike. Only raised a few hundred dollars. She is an 'insta-athlete' and has several product ambassador deals. Sure, she's come a long way and works hard. But I think there are others more deserving.

Incorrect.  She has done a full.

But I'll call it now.  She won't make the cutoff.

Unless she was told 12 months ago they were giving her a spot and Cairns was a training day.

Ah, I see. The article seemed to suggest to did Cairns half and was going to do her first full at Busso. Or I read it horribly wrong. Still.......fark....

She will do the swim fine in Kona but 7hrs on the bike in Cairns is going to be a crap load slower in Kona.

Then 6hrs on the run in Cairns. Prob the same in Kona.

Maybe I'm wrong and she will finish.  Will be tight.

Yeh i know i shouldn't care, it has no affect on my life at all. But just dont think that is what Kona is all about. Maybe i need to get with the times and accept it.

Since when hasn't Kona been about this?  Cook's get spots?  Disabled athletes get spots?  Celebs get spots?  And they pretty much always have haven't they?  The series championship is only one segment of the race and always had been!  In fact, it hasn't always been a series championship anyway?  Didn't you just have to apply once?  So I would say it's been about this much longer than it's been a series championship!

Accept or join the Rocket Salad camp.

I've said it before on here many times.  About 400 people that do Kona each year didn't qualify.  She is just another one of them.

I understand how it sucks for someone that trains their arse off attempting to qualify but it is what it is.

I'll come under fire for this comment but I think the issue is more those that go each year (year in year out) without qualifying at all that suck.   Yeah a one off cool.  But because your company sponsors the bike leg at Ironman XXXX they get given 4 spots. Or the BS Military spots.

No mention of the "easy" age groups Peter? ;)

The people who get given a spot like this pay the price on the day - when they get out in the windy bits they'd be wondering why they even wanted it

I have to ask the question - how in the hell does a sane person get to be 120kg overweight - was she sitting down eating her third pizza for lunch and joined the dots - even if it's 5kg it still goes on one mouthful at a time

It's not like the connection between eating lots and weight gain is a closely guarded secret 🙄

I just hope she doesn't run me down 😮

I just realised. Ashley finishes her 50 in 50 the weekend before Kona. I wonder if they'll give her a slot?

Part of the sport is the idea that anyone can do an Ironman if they really want it. Ironman have built a business on inspiring people. I have watched my fair share of the world champ dvds, and early on it was the crazy people with no legs and debilitating diseases and people who are too old, or fat who were the most inspiring and interesting to watch.

Take that away, and you are left watching the most boring racing there is. I enjoy it but triathlon is not an exciting sport. People slowly inch away/towards each other over hours and then pass them or get passed. Slowly. That's it.

There are two events in Kona, the World Champs and then the battlers. The Agers who have worked their pants off to get there do not even rate, but you do that for yourself.

If IRONMAN were a true world championship race you would get rid of all the age groupers, not just the slow free ticket ones. They aren't pros. They have nothing to do with the best of the best.

The military slots, I really don't get them but you would have to be American to understand.

Cheating as far as I am concerned, unless you need a crane to get you out of the house.

I only lost 30kg. Maybe if I put the 30 back on, plus another 50 then I can get to Kona too.

I have no idea AP, I ask that all the time, but from personal experience once I could not shop at a regular clothes shop (like Myer, DJs) I at least knew to not put on any more weight. I also had a size in my head, that if I went beyond that I better get working on it. Although, once they started in with those "fashionable" big womens shops (which was a little after I started dropping) you can still be heavy and find nice clothing (not moo-moos).

We see people around the shopping centres who could lose 30kg - most of them are in the company of others around the same size - I see it and see how the people you work with, socialise with - eat with can influence your habits - I know from experience I worked with a gang of guys who drank a lot of beer, around that time of my life I drank more than I ever did before or since, it's easy to get dragged along.

But 120kg over weight ???? That doesn't sneak up on you it's like being buried by an avalanche 🙄

If this is only in the last few days I feel sorry for her to be honest.

8 weeks to race day.

Imagine finding accommodation. And you know training for the race.

Ironman are bastards. Should have been for next year.

They could offer me a free entry. Free accommodation and I wouldn’t take it.

I don’t agree often with AP but this race is farking hard. You want to be prepared as much as you can  something you can’t do in 8 weeks

On 8 weeks notice being a 15hr athlete is gunna be hard. Really hard.

Interesting we reward a person for losing weight yet the people who do the right thing and look after themselves get screwed.  It is like private health insurance, you should be charge less if you are fit and charge more if obese.

Another factor in obesity going up is how we reward kids with food.

Like if you have a job you pay the government with tax.

But ifbur lazy and dont want to work, the government pays you.

Simple on the surface, but theres actually a lot more to it like social care, morals, encouragement, support etc.

I've never ever had any kind of social support from the government. Centrelink, newstart, unemployment, disability, etc.

Anyone else?

Yet I pay a ###load of tax. Yeah nah.

Interesting. I just saw this

and had a chat to Dazz about it. All he could say was "We're not going back to Kona!" LOL. He didn't see why I was making a big deal out of it.

Anyway, I was a bit peeved after watching this. I worked my arse off for my slot. Then I thought, maybe I'm just being a jealous cow. Let's post it on Trannies and see what others think. But then I get here, and it's Aust there!!

Glad I'm not the only one thinking like this. Yes, she's done amazing things. Yes, she's an inspiration to others, but this is KONA! It's the only IM AG race that you have to qualify for. It's all going downhill. If just anyone can go, it's not the same. 😕 I'm sad.

Never heard of her but going  from a 7.38 HIM to a 14.32 IM isn't a bad effort in the same year.

Indeed, it's always been like this. And I don't I have a problem with it. As I hinted at earlier, if you get rid of these age groupers, don't think you "special hard working" age groupers aren't logically next. Race pro and qualify if you want to be there 😉 A real world championship and none of us would be able to get there.

Be careful what you wish for!

Hang on. Taking the old measure of ‘double your HIM time, then add an hour’ to get an Ironman time estimate, she should have finished Cairns IM in about 16:30 hrs. Yet she actually did a 14:30 Ironman.

So. Improvement. Significant improvement in 5 weeks.

I reckon she she could go ok in Kona. Going out on a limb I reckon she might even get a PB ... if she has continued to train and improve over winter ...
