I don’t understand the reason. They don’t take responsibility if they are damaged anyway. The hard cases are much heavier.

Right. We all need to phone Hawaiian Airlines & complain. 1300 661 339

How are we supposed to travel to Kona now!!. Probably 95% of Triathletes have soft sided bags.

Very Frustrating!!

Great money spinner for Hawaiian.

Excess baggage fees

Why do China and Japan and Korea get 45kg

Buy Australia NZ and America only get 32kg

Also remember it's $150 per leg.

So $600 return from Australia.

Most hard cases weigh 11kg before the bike goes in.

Its $150 aud to kona from australia if on the same ticket.  Unless its changed from 2016

When I stopped in Honolulu on the way home it was more expensive as we weren't flying straight through but it wasnt 150 per leg.

Either way $300 return is still expensive. It's free on other airlines.  I have never paid extra for my bike

Yep. Easier to strap down and less risk for airline....

Ahhhh, sorry, I forgot about the extra leg to Kona. Understand.

What I hate is the way that we are penalised for looking after ourselves, but they don't weigh morbidly obese people who don't! I remember having an argument with United on the way back from Wildflower about the weight of my Tri All 3, when the woman beside me in the queue must have pushed 150Kg yet didn't get charged extra.

And I would also believe that they have stopped accepting them because the likelihood of damage is far greater. Certain Euro airlines have stopped accepting skis unless they are in a hard tube and I have had to make my own as classic skis run 210cm. Unbelievable PITA whereas they could just take some care in the loading and unloading of other people's valuable items!

Who still uses classic ‘straight edged skis’. I bet you get on a ski lift and the young kiddies ask.......”are they cross country skis”!

Yes I got stung $800 for excess baggage once when was moving.  Me my luggage (bikes) weighed less then a few people in the queue behind me yet they got no penalty and the same luggage limit.  If a plane is charging on weight due to fuel then it should be weight on people as well.

Like health insurance you should pay less if you are healthier.

You can’t say that about overweight people. Get a clue

Agreed.

Is there a space angle to the excess baggage too though? In the hold?

I've been told putting the shiv in a hard case requires me to pull it apart. Guess I will need an extra day on the ground at my destination to get it rebuilt.

It straps in nicely in my soft case.

I'll never KQ anyway :w00t1:

Because the average Chinese, Japanese or Korean weighs 13kg less than the average Aussie or Seppo? 🤔

Each time we've been it's $150 Bris to Kona - $150 Kona to Bris  - and I have a hard case 🤣

Isn't it two legs each way though?

If it's 6 legs, it's an insect.  8 legs would be an arachnid.

It’s $150 to get to your destination. Doesn’t matter if there are multiple legs.

Also the baggage allowances are different if you're flying domestic with them. On the way home they tried to tell me my baggage was overweight. After 15 mins of rearranging my baggage they realised I was only flying via Honolulu, not stopping over so then I could put all my stuff back in!!

Be careful of this if you're doing a stopover.

And how is a cardboard box more protective than a soft bike box?

It's more stackable, and packable, though.

If Ironman had balls they would just say, bike fly free in October or we will just move the race. They would finally have the excuse they have been looking for to move it

$300 x 2500 athletes plus hang on people with bike

$750,000

mind you ironman is probably taking a cut or just did a deal with a hard bike box company and we will start receiving their spam via ironman soon.

I've been saying that for years. IM would be getting a cut of the dollars for the bike coming in to Kona. When I went in 1990, it was free to get the bike from Brisbane to Sydney to LA to Florida to Honolulu, but then got stung to get it to Kona & back.

If they are making you sign a damage waiver why the hell do they care how you pack your bike?

Link to post

Because it's easier to pack and/or stack something in a box than something in a plastic bag...

Yeah but if it’s in a hard case and they can stack it properly they should handle it with care and not require you to sign way your rights to have your property treated as it should.

Surely this should also happen for surfboards golf clubs etc too.

I suspect it has a bit to do with how many get damaged. I've been hearing for years that Hawaiian are not at all kind to bikes and despite never having been to Kona, it was the reason why I decided to get a hard case. I think every time I fly there is at least one person whos box has been destroyed, the bike damaged or the bike has been smashed out of the mounts in the bag. No doubt too many claims for Hawaiian

Had my travel agent contact Hawaiian airlines about this and they are allowing soft bike cases for the Ironman event only but not for any other time of year.  It’s now noted on my ticket that I am a competitor and the soft case has been pre approved.
