Winterfish 2018

A short 1.6km swim in the rain this morning. Other than the fact I got cold in the rain, it was quite a warm morning this morning, and very surreal in the pre-dawn on a dead calm lake.

Longest swim for a couple of months, 6k. It could have been a little monotonous but for the synchronised swimmers rehearsing their moves in the next lane. Amazing how much work they're putting in under the water and how long they hold their breath. They warmed up with a set of 10 x 50's..........under water.

Just a quick 1.4km this morning as the Blood bank appointment was at 7:15, and the moon was covered by heavy cloud, so very little light early. Quite a warm morning here (18 degrees air temp I think) so it was easy to get in, though it was just a bit difficult getting dried off & warm after the swim in the rain. :)

Great to get in a swim & a plasma donation & still be in the office by 8:15.

4x100 P/B easy 
24x50(1 fast/1 slow) 
4x100 P/B easy

 

The fast 50's were all out at about 44 - 45 secs per 50 in the 25m pool

slow were easy at 54 secs

 

Bloody weird to attempt fast swimming

Yes! 

The 50's after the faster ones felt like nothing. No effort. Yet I was going okay for me. Changes my perception of ouch. 

 

But I will do what is given to me in the program. That's what I aim to do. But next years Winterfish.... Looking forward to it already

A bit over 5km this morning. That makes 9 days straight in the dam. Great morning despite the westerlies. These shots were from the far end of the dam, out of the wind.

600/50/500/50/400/50/300/50/200/50/100/50. Loved it, but it was hard towards the end.

Then 4x400 pull, 200 easy, 100 easy. Longest swim in quite a while, and no cramping.

How did you do that first bit? How hard were the long reps, and how hard the 50's. What break? Or was the 50 easy, as the rest?

It sounds like an interesting set.

The first 600 was my 'warm up'. The rest of the set was hard-ish but controlled on the 'long' reps, and all of the 50's were 'strong but controlled' - slightly above threshold pace (which for me is around 1.27 pace (I think) at the moment). Some of the rest intervals were determined by letting swimmers go, but generally I tried to keep it not too long. 

 The hardest rep for me was the 300 - just starting to get tired, but you know there's still some solid stuff to come. The 200 felt like 3.00, so I got a nice surprise when I saw the time.

Nice work.. that's the good thing about winterfish - you can take other people's sets & adapt them to your own pace.

I had the boat anchor lane to myself. Wicked in the sunshine. After I finished I went over and watched some of the surfers trying to get waves. Bloody awesome stuff

Copying FF1077 with 3.4km also.  3 sets of 4x200 with first 50 fast, then first 100 fast, first 150 fast and finally the whole 200 fast.  20 secs rest between each 200.  Didn't hit the paces I expected, but that's been the story of my swimming for the last few months.  Just can't seem to pick up the pace anymore...

3.2km this morning. 

Not so lonely at the dam this morning. There was a girl doing yoga at the beach as I was heading out, a kayaker doing fast laps (he's there most days), and another swimmer that has been there the last few days. He's gradually working up to longer distances, and did about 1km this morning, his first trip outside the swimming enclosure. He's also sans wet-suit, and enjoying the brisk mornings. :)

Another beautiful morning out there. I think once if it gets too cold to swim I may just go out & walk the tracks before work, just to enjoy the sunrise.

I did 2km yesterday afternoon, finishing on dusk, and then 3.2km again this morning.

I'm not doing any real speed work, just a few 50m to 200m surges, and some longer effort work, but mainly concentrating on stroke technique. I'm feeling a lot better through the water with all this work, and the consistency is paying off. I'm also still enjoying it, as the challenge to see how long I can keep going as the water cools is appealing to me. I may have to start shortening the swims a bit though, as I'm getting tingling feet as I approach the hour now, but we'll see how we go.

Winter is nearly half over, we'll start to warm up from here. (Not really though, August is usually the coldest month).

Still chugging away out at the dam. 3.2km this morning. Swam easy to halfway (1:48 pace), then came back at 1:40 pace. I tried a slightly shorter stroke, entering earlier and bringing the hand straight down in the pull. It felt good, and put less strain on my shoulder, so I'll try it for a longer swim tomorrow.

6 degrees forecast for the city tomorrow, which means 4 or 5 at the dam, then a week of days not quite as cold. If I can make it through this, I'm going to try to do an OWS every day this month (the "wet" to go with my "dry July"). The only problem is I fly down to Melbourne for work on the 30th. So if there is anybody in Melbourne that can direct me to an OWS venue for that Tuesday, I'd be very appreciative.

What's the water temp? Is it popular for swimming?

Water temp is about 17 at the moment, so bearable, but most Qlders don't think so. I'm often the only swimmer there in the mornings in late Autumn/Winter, but in summer there can be a dozen on week days & more on weekends. You also get a few paddlers.

In summer, it's very popular, not just with people swimming distance, but families bring the kids down to play. I've seen the place with probably 200 people there. Summer school holidays are very crowded, but once you've swum a couple hundred metres there's just a few out swimming or paddling.

 

Edit to add: This morning was the first really cold morning for a while, and there was one paddler there at sunrise. As I was getting back in after 3.2km, the regular guy was heading off, so I swam with him a bit further, and as we were getting out, another 2 turned up. I was in full wetsuit & booties, the rest of us in budgies.
