Touristy things to do in Cairns

Recommended Posts

In Cairns for the next couple of weeks.

Situation is I'm on call for work and have no vehicle.  So am limited to day trips at the most.

Have done the skyrail/kuranda train trip.  So seeking suggestions that won't break the bank.

Botanic gardens opposite the airport are very nice. But then I love tropical plants & gardens.

There used to be a great running trail up the hills behind it too. Incredible views of Cairns and the bay from the top.

Is Johno's Blues bar still going? 30 years ago it used to have some great acts. 25 years ago it used to have some great wet t-shirt contests. No idea what it's like now, but it was originally a great old-school blues joint.

Try Brett’s outback food tour.

we did it a few weeks ago and it is a great way to explore and learn about the area, including the Atherton tablekands.

he makes a real effort and talks all day about the area so you pick up a lot.

if you can get on a trip up to the tablelands, id recommend you do that.  Seriously a good part of the country.  Go out to Tinaroo and look at the Anzac memorial etc.

Get  a bus up to mossman and walk the falls

Go cut some laps at the cable ski park

If you're there on the 13th, there is an OWS at Lake Barrine up on the tablelands. 1k, 1.9km & 3.8km.

Not touristy, but would be heaps of fun.

.. according to the Ironman tourism handbook, you can check out the Opera House and Harbour Bridge while you are there.

Take your sun screen, food / drink and it is a really good chill out for the day.  First ferry out and last back. Enjoy.
