Kona spot. No need to qualify

Recommended Posts

Quote

People like to bang on about Kona being the holy grail of the sport but it's just another race. It's like the Nike Air Jordan III I want to buy at $4500.

Yeah - and Elle's pizza was probably not that good anyway 😜

I would walk away if she ordered a pizza with pineapple on it.

I think we have found some common ground. This could be the start of a special friendship.

Maybe you could go to Kona and consummate it.

Back to the cost. This is about what we were paying in school fee. One has finished, the second end of next year. So 2020 i could get something out of the same money. May mean putting of buying the boat for another year.

A little bit more reading & they have added a bonus spot to the

"PR Challenge Slot- One (1) additional IRONMAN World Championship slot will be awarded at each full-distance IRONMAN XC Series Event in 2018 to the athlete with the Most Improved Personal Record.

If it's your first race, set a slow time & then race again to smash your PB & you have a spot for Kona.

& this gem:

*Note: IRONMAN reserves the right to modify the roll-down procedure for XC World Championship slots.

Money talks!!!!!

With an estimated net worth of ~$95m, if you struck up a rapport with Elle over dinner I reckon she could sort a Kona spot for you no worries...

I would go in a heart beat if given the chance. Unfortunately that the problem, my heart beat won’t let me.

Halves are at present my only option and that might finish next year.  Do what you want to do when you can.

Yeah it's alright for you to offer one of your Hawaii finishes, but I'm too old to be of any use to her - and B@W doesn't have a Hawaii finish to give up 😀

I took a spot via the eBay auction last year, didn't pay as much as this one went for, but it was significant.

Still conflicted about the whole thing, even 6 months after I finished the race. However, I don't regret doing it.

I will write a review one day and post it in race reports.

I wouldnt be upset.

About 400 don’t qualify to start kona.

You did it. You finished it.

Bucket list - tick.

Next stop Roth.

I've obviously never been to Kona, and will never be fast enough to go. But from watching telecasts online etc, I can't get my head around how people are finishing anywhere near the 17 hour mark? How many 'non qualifying' spots are there?? I couldn't see how anyone could qualify in any age group slower that 10-11 hours max, but it's seems there are age groupers out there all night?

There are about 400 non qualifying spots each year.

And it’s farking hard.

I cant believe people can run so fast there.

It’s a hard course and anyone that finishes at any time is impressive.

I hang shit on AP all the time but it’s pretty amazing For anyone to finish

the year I did it, it wasn’t windy  but it was hot  coming out of the energy lab at about 5pm the temp was 46c

There is a saying that getting to the start line of an Ironman is the hard part.

Re Kona. It’s getting to the finish line.

Time to end that.  You have nothing to feel conflicted about.  They offered a spot up, you took it.  What's wrong with that?  If you didn't take it someone else would have!

I would have qualified at Arizona (I raced in the CEO category)...

CEO Category???

Ok, so there's Pro Spots, Previous Winners, Age Group Qualifiers, Military Service Spots, Para Athletes, Celebrities, CEO Qualifiers, Legacy Spots, Charity Spots and Auction Spots available that I know of...  Just how many different ways are there to get into this 'World Championships' event???

Sponsors, employees of Wtc, officials from other events, medical spots.

I had a mate that worked for timex that did it 3times.

I have a friends wife that’s done it as she’s a nurse. You can go a few days before and I think it’s a 2day conference and then help on race day and you can race the following year. 40 slots there.

I was offered a spot a couple of years back as a mate of mine works for Wtc in USA. I turned it down. I’ve had my turn. Others can go and have their dream.

I remember back when snap printing sponsored busso that the owner got 2 spots to Kona each year for him and a mate or brother. Can’t remember exact details. Or the guy from Minolta that went to Kona every year from sponsoring Forster Ironman.

If you really want to go, there are heaps of ways other than qualifying.

Don't forget if you know someone on the local council spot. I have heard IM have given spots away just to keep the local Mayor happy.
