That is crap - you may know a few people who have wangled a spot but seriously work out how many people 25% of the field is - If it's so easy to get in and you know all the right people why don't you go back and do it properly, you can't be happy with your first go - while you're their get a spot for your mate who's retired several times and doesn't want to go anyway - I'd love to race you both on the World Championship course - it'll be fun for all of us 🙄

You are deluded if you think everyone qualifies.

About 500-700 don’t qualify.

AP there is more to life than Kona.

Kona defines your life not mine.

Its just a triathlon in Hawaii.

Defend your claim of 25% I’m calling BS.

Yeah there is a no win for me.

I beat an old guy and people go of course you’d beat someone 35 years older than you.

Or you beat me and then people go, you got beaten by an old than Jesus guy.

Its a dumb challenge.

Get a list of all those that qualified last year and also the results and it will be easy to see the people that didn’t qualify.

Even Messick said it in an interview once.

The best scam I've seen is the medical free entry.  Volunteer in Kona and next year do the race.

This is not correct

OK, I just got bored with what was on TV.

There are 40 events on the IM calendar. They haven't said how many slots will be at Busso next year, but assuming 40, that makes 1760 qualifying slots at their races around the world. I don't count qualifying at a HIM as qualifying.

How many toe the line at Kona these days?

edit to add: Plus there are a number that KQ through their performance in the previous year's championship. That will add a few.

Also edit to fix my maths. Added 40

Save the time. 40 at all but the 5 x regional championships which have 80, 80, 80, 80, 75, Norway has 30, Korea 30, Taiwan 35, and as I said, I'm assuming 40 for Busso.

So it’s 1000 short?

hmmm

the medical they go into a draw.  Or at least did when my friend Kellie did it.  There were 30 slots that year under the medical entry

Championship races have 80 spots, standard Ironman has 40 on average, 70.3 have 30.

So  lets say 50 on average (there is only a few Championship races)

50 x 40 = 2000

Ironman.com says that 2472 people raced last year.

25% seems about right.

You are assuming that everyone that qualifies turns up.  And we know that’s not the case.

You know, people have teeth issues a day before the race and can’t take part.

Or other reasons, they don’t turn up.

That would be at least 10% that qualify.  I’d say more if you look at the dns list.

So take 200 off your qualify list.

1800 qualify.

672 don’t.

2472 is the number ironman claims lined up. The last finisher was no:2307 in a time of 16:56 in the 40/44 age group.

Your claim of 25% seems to be about right.

That also doesn't include the old & young age groups with one or two competitors which is basically a lucky dip lottery.

There are 175 Legacy spots for Kona 2019. If people can not take them, they are offered to the next person in the queue. So 7% of the starters are Legacy athletes.
