Without P & P doing the commentary on SBS this year, we may be missing out on a lot of the culture & castles of the regions (not sure if our new boys will be up to the same standard in that department), so hopefully we can get a few punters on here put together some "Trev like" posts to bring back that atmosphere of the tour.

I'll kick off with an opening salvo for Stage 1. Any other volunteers would be greatly appreciated.

Harder to get a team together under budget than it was for the Giro. Mind you my Giro team was very budget.

Here's my go at a preview for Stage 1. Someone else's turn for stage 2.

Stage 1 : Individual Time Trial  - Dusseldorf 14km
This year the tour moves the Grand Depart to Dusseldorf, the capital of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Three French teams (Confidis, Direct Energie and Fortuneo-Vital Concept) and a Belgian team (Wanty Groupe Goberte) join the 18 Pro Tour teams for this year’s event. Wanty Groupe Goberte are making their Tour Debut.

Stage 1 this year is pancake flat, with minimal turns, and very fast. It is made for someone like Tony Martin. This nearly mirrors the opening stage of 2 years ago in Utrecht where our own Rohan Dennis rode the fastest ever TdF Time Trial to pip him by 5 seconds and take the Yellow into stage 2. Martin will have a huge fan-base cheering him on, hoping to have a German in Yellow on day 2, and with Dennis not on the BMC roster for this tour, will have every chance to take it.

There has also been controversy around the snubbing of Germany’s only Tour winner, Jan Ulrich, not being invited to the Grand Departe on the 20th anniversary of his win, in his home country. Many of Germany’s current professional riders, along with others have spoken up, but his ties to the EPO era have kept him on the outer as far as the administration is concerned. He will still be in the region, riding a charity event in a nearby town.

Christian Prudhomme’s Comment:

Of the 13 kilometres of the inaugural time-trial course, close to 10 will be set on the banks of the Rhine River or the bridges above it… and bends can be counted on the fingers of both hands! There will be no or almost no mystery: the “rouleurs” will have their word to say. In this speciality where a new generation is showing up, a multiple world-champion boosted by the support of his fans could well be the fastest man.
Düsseldorf is well known for its Altbier, a hoppy beer which translates as old [style] beer, a reference to the pre-lager brewing method of using a warm top-fermenting yeast like British pale ales. Over time the Alt yeast adjusted to lower temperatures, and the Alt brewers would store or lager the beer after fermentation, leading to a cleaner, crisper beer.

Along the way:

Düsseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the seventh most populous city in Germany. Düsseldorf is an international business and financial centre, renowned for its fashion and trade fairs. Düsseldorf lies at the centre of the Lower Rhine basin, where the delta of the River Düssel flows into the Rhine. This city has a population of 600,000.

Düsseldorf staged its first international fashion show in 1949, and has since grown into the fashion capital of Germany.

Kraftwerk are a band originally from Dusseldorf. They released an album in 2003 titled “Tour de France” to mark the 100th edition of the Tour. To mark the Grand Departe in their home town, Canyon have release a Kraftwerk Bike, and Tony Martin will be riding a bike hand-finished in a design by one of the band. They will also be playing a concert after the finish of the stage.

Synopsis :-
Tonight’s ITT is longer than a regular Prologue which should rule out the sprinters that sometimes take the shorter events, but still a lot shorter than a traditional ITT. It is dead flat, and not technical, so it will be brute force and speed that wins the day.

At this point, the weather bureau is saying rain in the morning, easing off late in the afternoon. Rain can make these races a lottery, but you can be sure the teams will keep their guns till the end hoping it dries a little.

Riders to watch:-
Without Rohan Dennis in the field, Martin is a big favourite, and being local, the big money is on him. Primoz Roglic, a former Slovenian Ski Jumper has already won four Time Trials this year, and has targeted this stage to take a Yellow Jersey on debut. He missed out on a Pink Jersey in the opening stage of his first GT last year by 1/100th of a second to Tom Doumolin, and then won the next ITT, so he has a good chance here.

Viewer Rating = 5 out of 10 (Could be a 10/10 if you like spills in the wet)

Race starts = 11:15pm (AEST)
Approx finish time = 2:45am (AEST)
SBS coverage starts at 10:30pm (AEST)
GUW Time = (Get Up to Watch). Not sure on this one. It will be interesting all the way through, but only if you’re interested in bike porn and spills in the rain.
Who's your tip?
Tony Martin.

Wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing as I haven't really followed cycling since I was racing myself about 15 years ago.  But Go Easy's 'Gunners' are ready to roll.

Thanks Ex, I need a bit of a distraction from work and life at the moment.

I just had a look at the start list for tonight's ITT. With the weather forecast saying rain, possibly drying in the late afternoon, it's no surprise Sky have put Froome as their last rider, and Movistar have listed Quintana, however it is very surprising, and I think disappointing that Orica have listed Durbridge.

In their early years they stated their goal in the Grand Tours was to win stages, so this would be as expected, but they have come in to this race with Chaves as a real contender for the podium. To not put him in the best position from day 1 I think is a slight on him, and a vote of no confidence by team management. If he misses a place by a few seconds, team management need to take the blame.

They have also stated they want to win the White Jersey with Yates, and with Durbridge as their favoured rider tonight, have hindered him as well.

Hmmm...  Not a great start.

Valverde, my main man, is out already.  But at least he was looking good for the two minutes that he was actually in the race this year!  He was gunna win it!

PS - I'm blaming Ex for my demise...  Nowhere in his write-up did he mention that Valverde was no good at cornering in the wet.

If I can take credit for it, I will. Of all the drug taking, cheating Spanish, I hate him the most.

The only bad point in this is that it probably gives Froome more chance of winning the race, and if there's one thing that's as bad as a cheating , drug taking Spaniard, it's a Pom (fat ones excluded FP).

Porte must have been taking it very cautiously. After one stage he already has 35 seconds to make up on Froome. Not an auspicious start.

Not a very auspicious start for a number of us. I don't think I've ever scored 0 points in a stage before.

Typical. The Larsen family will dominate.

I believe ben allows his girls the entire month off school to just watch the tour.
