Giro d'Italia - Tipping Comp

Recommended Posts

The Giro starts this Friday. Numbers were down a bit last year on our tipping comp, so could you advise interest in having another comp this year. If I get a few takers I'll set up the league on Velogames tomorrow.

I want to, but I am not sure I can even drag together the motivation to do the normal half-arsed effort I usually do.

I haven't really followed pro cycling that closely for a while, but being a team player put me down.  I'll need some motivation to get back into it following my last bit of procedures to allow me to resume training after 4 months off later this month.

Bugger-all starters as yet, but I'm entering anyway, so i'll set up a league.

Here's the details.

Go to https://www.velogames.com/giro-ditalia/2017/

Follow the directions to enter a team, then hit join a league. Enter the league code below.

League Name: Transitions
League Code: 870208004911

Then just sit back and whinge about how poorly your riders are doing, or the drugs some of the others are taking.

I'll check the budget and visa situation for Team Tally Ho. I've suggested a team base with hills, they suggested a base with a beach, sun and wifi, so Blackpool it is then.

Rudey's Riders are on the rollers warming up. I like the tipping, makes me pay greater attention to other events within the race, other than just GC and stage winners. I'm hoping for big things from Caleb Ewan again.

No cost. Just your sanity, but you lost that joining Trannies. You pick 9 cyclists from the list, keeping to a total budget of 100 points. Easy to do, hard to do well. :)

Then sit back, watch, and comment.

Try googling "velogames", then go from there. You will have to register, then follow the instructions from there.

And one non starter already. I've had to change the whole balance of my team. This is not going to be pretty.

BTW only 7 teams in the League up to this point. C'mon folks, get onboard .

Have you noticed Astana are starting with only 8 riders this year, as a tribute to Scarponi, who was to be their number 1 man at the Giro.

So Dave said one person has withdrawn, does the website remove the rider when this happens, or do you need to keep an eye on another website for news?  If so, what's the best go to site for quick updates on riders?

I picked Gianluca Brambilla, but later when I reviewed my team on the Transitions League page he had an "x" next to his name as a non-starter. As I can't find him listed on the Velogames list of available riders I presume he was a late withdrawal.

Still worthwhile checking your team prior to the gun going off. Usually you need every rider you can get.

As Dave said, go to your team in Velogames, and look at the table. Later, once it's started, you'll see the points each rider has scored, but for now, you can look for a tick or cross under "Starter".

After a tense team meeting, Team Tally Ho have relocated to Panama, there were various reasons but mostly I'm a sucker for a natty hat B)

Only 11 hours left to enter.

I noticed Velogames are running a Grand Tour competition across the 3 tours this year (maybe I should hit them up for something for stealing my idea), so when you enter the next 2 tours, use the same details as this race to ensure you are included in their tallies. That should make my job much easier, as I won't have to add all the scores up myself this year. :)

Go and check your teams for any late drop outs. I had to bring in a new rider because one of my original team was obviously dropped.

I probably could have won anyway, but now I'm guaranteed...

The smack talk has started already, and they haven't even had their last blood bag before the kick-off.

So turns out my rider (Pirazzi) wasn't dropped, he was booted out for failing a drugs test! I need to talk to our doctor.

I like that. He wasn't booted out for taking drugs. He was booted for failing the test. He should have been smarter than that.

edit to add: He wasn't the only one. Ruffoni was also booted for the same thing. The UCI are currently looking at their options, as a team with 2 x adverse analytical findings in 12 months is to be suspended for 15 to 45 days. I'd be starting to think about my options if I had any Bardiani riders in my team.

And you'r right Tim. The doctor needs a flogging.

I just noticed that the Giro organisers have scrapped a plan they had to award cash prizes to riders with the fastest times on specified downhill sections. UCI and riders groups protested it could lead to safety issues.

Just realised that there'll be no broadcast on SBS. Arrrrrgh!!! Is there a tech friendly way to watch and record the broadcast? Sent from the mobile client - Forum Talker

Eurosport if you have it.

Generally if I can't watch or record it, I go to Steephill TV. If you look at that day's stage, they generally have recorded bits. Some are just the last few minutes, and some in another language, but at most of the stage races & classics this year there has been a link to a Eurosport recording of the last 30 to 40km.

edit to add: The race just got underway with the end of the initial neutral stage.

Yeah it's a shame there is no SBS coverage, I wonder what happened there? SBS made cycling so popular in Australia the Giro/rights/media onsellers bumped the price up beyond what was affordable?

US has the same issue apparently. The normal online provider isn't even doing it this year.

Bad luck for Caleb Ewan so far. 3 stages, and 2 decided by small breaks close to the finish. He won the bunch sprint in both of those. the other stage he was in perfect position with Grieppel, and pulled a foot as he launched.

Hopefully he'll get a stage next week.

Now for Etna tomorrow night.

I thought he pulled his foot as a result of a slipped chain?

According to Backstage Pass he pulled the foot just to make the sprint interesting and the dropped chain was the thing that did him in. Although he did seem to have issues with his tounge being stuck to he cheek while explaining that one.

I was thinking about having a whinge about picking Rohan Dennis (hope he recovers strong for his next set of races)

But then I look at the current state of the tipping comp, and apparently, not only am I currently third, but the two people ahead both have Dennis in their team as well.

I Will say it is had to follow the race when the two sets of media I can follow is cyclingtips and twitter(delayed because I am not reading it live) - If it was on SBS then I doubt I would be sleeping...

Great sprint by my team's fast man Frday night. Caleb was the first to jump, and held on to win by less than half a wheel to the next 2. That's the 3rd bunch sprint he's won. It's just a pity there were small breaks still out in the first 2.

The field blew apart last night, but not for the reasons i expected. A police motorbike parked on the road toward the edge, just as the peleton was starting to mix it with a km or so to the base of the final climb. Half the Sky team came down, along with Yates & a few others. By the time they were back on their bikes, Movistar had attacked the base of the climb, and they were never going to get near.

Quintana showed he is a class above the others on these climbs, and I would think unless they let a "nobody" breakaway take a 5+minute win in the next few stages, he'll hold the pink jersy to the end.
