Sub 2hr marathon attempt

Are u gunna try this ex?

I truly can't get over the pace they run at for that distance. I think I once did 3km at that speed.

I suppose it's like any sport though. 1500m at sub 1min/100m, or 40km at 50+km/hr. Those speeds are attainable for us over short spurts, but the thought of doing it for any real distance is unfathomable.

I'll take that as an admission of guilt!

But don't worry - took me a few seconds to pick up on it too.

Breaking 2 hours is very simple:

Nike puts up $2million take it all for whoever breaks it. If no-one breaks it no-one gets the money.

Set the date for one year from now, so everyone has time to dope themselves to their eyeballs and back again, and it will be a case of whoever doesn't get caught or dies.

Sub two hours guaranteed and Nike gets all the publicity they need

I don't think they should drug test for this.

Its not like it's the Olympics or a real race.

Drug up up and break the record.

And of course to get the $2M you have to be wearing Nike shoes.

Drug up up and break the record.

If it is a record that is going to stand then it has to have drug testing before the record can be ratified. But are they saying they will break 2hr or set a world record, two quite different things.

Do they drug test the guys that create world records for eating the most hotdogs?

breakng 2hrs like this is just that. Breaking 2hrs.

Doing it at an iaaf Olympics or world championships is totally different. Sure drug test there.

https://www.outsideonline.com/2170396/break-2-hour-marathon-runners-will-have-change-how-they-fuel

intersting read

not sure how accurate it is but it states they usually only take in 20 to 25  hrs carbs per hr

and trying to take in 60 grams per hr is extreme, I think most on here claim they need at least 60 per hr and most try and get in much more during an IM

no wonder AP sees so many people walking the marathon

But won't it be the IAAF, not Guinness that ratifies any Marathon World Record? I'm sure if it is eligible to be a record (course design, not motor-paced etc) they would want to at least have the right to drug test before/after the attempt. I'd say all the guys going for it would be on WADAs out of competition testing program anyway, so they could rock up race-day and test them.

I don't think from what I have read/heard that it will be ratified by IAAF as:

pace car including pace and drafting set up, so the runners are tucked in behind fairing

special shoes, including "spring type propulsion" in sole

3 day window on a car race track and will go when atmospheric conditions are optimal

3 runners especially trained and prepared for this

This is a Nike publicity event as only Nike sponsored athletes (the current world record holder is with Adidas), it is to see if it can be done and could potentially have the Banister effect

But they are only racing for 2hrs - it's not an event that spans 3 meal times. They probably don't even need anything for the first hour. Plus they rely on a little dehydration to get lighter during the mara to maintain speed.

Re nike 2hr challenge.

Its not sanctioned.

They now it seems to draft off a van driving in front.

They just want to be first on the moon / break 2hrs.

Tipping it will happen.

Guven it wont be sanctioned. They might as well drug up too.

I think even though its just a proof of concept idea, Im ok with the special shoes, drafting, pace runners etc, it still will mean the (unaltered) human body has run under 2 hrs, however I think drugging up destroys this idea all together.

I agree totally but sadly most athletes in the sanctioned races are drugged up so these blokes might as well be

not sure they should be saying they are though

It's not an "open slather to drug up" though. These guys would still be on the out of competition testing program, so that guy knocking on doors in Melbourne could drop over there to do a couple of "surprise" checks.

I often think that re: the pace of pro athletes...

I get excited at a 70km bike ride with an average pace of 30km/h ..... only to see pro riders managing nearly 40km/h over a 2-3 week tour including multiple days of huge climbs!

Or when I swim 1km in 15 minutes .... then I remember that people swim 50% further in less time ...

It really puts into perspective the performance of pro athletes ...

I agree.  At Texas one of the guys ran a 2:42 I think off the bike.

A guy at work has trained his arse off to get a qualifying time for Boston (run at canberra) and he did a 2:58 I think.

He put it all on the line to do that time.

So yes some professionals are pretty amazing

I can't look away. Looks like he'll just miss at this point, only about 3.5km to go. He's got 10 minutes to do it.

Kilometres down scroll under the little timer.

Happy with that. Too manufactured.  Let it happen in the theatre of a race. Two hour advert.

Tell that to the runner who were too manufactured over the two hours.
