Haha... I'm just the opposite, I'm scared that I'll get old if I stop doing this shit!

Yep, I was one of the ones who three years ago who would have put money on me doing Cairns 2019.

It was at Cairns 2012 that I qualified for Kona with a 9:52 (3rd in 45-49 Age Group) at the grand old age of 48.  It's a great race in a beautiful part of the world and is full of lots of great memories for me.  I had little doubt that I'd be prepared to return there to do a comeback race in a brand new age group in 2019.  I'd like to have proved that Kona wasn't a fluke.  Plus, I was really looking forward to catching up (and indeed finally meeting) many good friends from this forum.

Unfortunately, I stopped doing this shit and I got old!

I won't be there in 2019, in fact I doubt I'll ever do an Ironman again, but I do still want to commit to having a catch up with some folks from this site.  I'm not sure what event that should be, but something that everyone could be involved in would be ideal.  Perhaps a teams event or a training weekend might be the go, I'm easy but I think it should be more of a social event than a serious sporting weekend.  Cheap, inclusive and social, that is all - surely we can get something together.  Just a thought.

Excellent, I've just moved up 3 places in the results!

(I'm planning on doing a Bradbury in 2019 :smartarse:).

Or I'll be one of the nameless ones who wiped themselves out...

Falnman must be taking this race seriously. Getting up there so early.

I might do the Cairns Park Run on Saturday if anyone else is keen.

I might do Park Run as well. BTW, I’m here for my birthday- not racing.

I have some course photos/video from last year if any Cairns noobs want em?

First time in Cairns so anything you want to post is of interest re how it all works up there.  Did see the run has gone to 4 laps so hopefully not the same as Busso where it becomes pretty congested on the paths.  Crossed my mind as to whether or not we can use special needs on each lap as a result?  Some fairly negative comments around on the Ironman branded gels and gives me another option as to how much I take with me.

I'll post some up.

It wasn't congested for the 70.3. I eat anything. Ironman gels a bit meh, but went down OK. Watch out for crampfix gels, loads of people complained about these, I grabbed one thinking it was a normal gel and it's like battery acid, spent 10 mins trying not to vomit. Hopefully they've removed the dog leg on the run, that was a bit shit. Also note the run is on concrete, think twice about racing flats.

windy and shit at palm cove this afternoon (will see if I can post a photo)

the water is.. brown muck - just like home in Lake Burley Griffen.

Quick note, just after the turn around in port douglas, there are a few decent potholes in old port road, one within 50meters of the intersection, and then a few more spread across the road about 200m further up.

Be careful, At speed, you could kill a rim with them.

It's always murky - there's a river just down the road that keeps it murky - you have to go off shore 10-20k to get clean water

You'll find if you swim in it the visibility is always poor - it may look OK on the top - it can get a hell of a chop there - a few years ago it was so rough a lot of the poorer swimmers got pulled out 2/3 the way through because they just were not going to make it 😪

Strange, we just asked a couple from the SLSC & they said the water clears up & it's perfect for swimming.

yeah at very best it can look a bit bluey, but would be rare for it to be clear.

I like it murky, I prefer not to see the crocs before they get me! My third time up there this year, never had clear water unfortunately.

with the photos you lot put up, you are really bad at taking them.

An instagram influencer would make them look so so much better.

Swam for the first time since Ironman Maryland today.

The Mosman Gorge is beautiful. We then went on a family hike in the gorge.

I don’t miss Ironman training at all

Currently in the rego line. Have moved 20% of the way in 20mins. The likelihood of dnf'ing the rego seems possible, already seen 4 people quit.
