How Burns got a start is baffling. Has hardly played in the last couple of months. No form to speak of. Home ground knowledge.

He’s played BBL cricket only because of the way the season was structured (see my earlier post). He was THE form opener batsman at the time they shut down the Shield Season in mid December (last 8 Shield innings were 49, 80, 6, 38, 96, 24no, 18 & 74). By a country mile. As bad as he is, he’s just better than the available alternatives. It might have been different if Bancroft came back from suspension at a time when there was actually games in the longer format available for him to show where he is at, but ‘tip and run’/‘bash and smash’ is no real indicator of form against the new ball in test cricket after 9 months out of the game. Alas.

No centuries but he successfully saw off the new ball in 5 out of 7 completed innings - a strike rate that no other sheild opener has come close to this season). Going to be a rugged ashes tour. The sri lankans were threatening to bowl us out before the ball stopped swinging.
