Top Gear - Now . . . The Grand Tour

Recommended Posts

$250 million is the new deal signed with AMAZON overnight.

Much more that the BBC were handing over to the boys.

I figure they are pretty happy.

Famed Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have announced they will host a new show for Amazon.

The show will air in 2016, produced by Andy Wilman, Clarkson’s old school friend and former Top Gear executive.

Clarkson said he feels he has made the right move.

“I feel like I’ve climbed out of a bi-plane and into a spaceship,” he said in a statement released by Amazon.

“We have become part of the new age of smart TV, ironic, isn’t it?” May added.

“Amazon? Oh yes, I have been there, I got bitten by a bull ant,” Hammond said.

The show will start filming shortly and is as yet unnamed.

Amazon paid close to $250 million for the deal, the Financial Times reports.

If this price is correct it would be one of the highest ever paid by a streaming service for a show.

Netflix spent only $100 million for House of Cards.

The change for the trio comes after Clarkson’s contract with Top Gear was ceased following an “unprovoked physical attack” on one of the show’s producers.

Hammond and May followed him and also left the show.

Yeah, it's brilliant that people can gain so much from violence. The guys an arse, the people that support him no less so.

I agree, although I'm not sure I'd classify a punch from Jeremy Clarkson as violence. I'd imagine it would have been hangbags at 10 paces, not some brutal street fight..

They get let off, time off with pay and if they are really lucky they become the victim and we talk about their redemption 6 months later.

If the use PEDS they can either become and immortal and just a champion who new nothing and was a poor victim of the mean doctor.

If your a true champion of your sport, role model and stand up to racists you somehow become the bully and deserving of abuse, non of which is racially motivated.

This country has some serious issues

Be interesting to see what the actual amount was that the presenters get and how the show goes on the obscure Amazon channel that you subscribe to to get free delivery - its a very interesting experiment and in line with what Amazon are doing.

and some more

The most expensive and most recent phoenix-like revival of these is the program featuring former Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, which Amazon Prime commissioned for a reported $250 million over three seasons. There’s speculation that show will make its way to Australia through Stan.

Symo it's only a matter of time until amazon and google etc buy sporting rights to stuff like the NRL and AFL and the local channels won't have a hope of matching it.

5 years I'd say. Should the sports do it? no.

But look at the rugby and V8's. Sold 100% of events to Foxtel and if you don't have it, you don;t see it. The failure of that is the average person no longer sees games. So they lose followers. But the current admin just take the cash.

BTW I was taking the piss about clarkson punching someone and gets millions for a reward.

Peter, cricket is 100% pay TV in the UK now, as is EPL but you still have to pay extra to watch the really big EPL games.

Moto GP is gone to BT Sport but FTA gets highlights a day later. F1 has a 50/50 split between BBC and Sky for live races ( all the Sky races are live no matter what).

Seems like only a matter of time.

The problem is that the Sirpository-Turncoat-Ergas fraudband model will slooooow done content delivery beyond Fauxtel so decades to come. Otherwise AFL, NRL and other sports would give the bird to Fauxtel and also the likes of Amazon and set up their own internet based channels.

people pay to watch cricket

Apparently. I only knew because my Dad was moaning about it a few years ago that it had all gone to SKY. I did point out to him that he already had SKY Sports and how was he affected by this?

I got that look from him that said 'when are you going back to Oz'?

Certainly the way its going - things splintering off everywhere and the guys with the really deep pockets are getting involved. No real time to watch anymore and figure I can do a catch up on youtube some time later :)

The new Telstra setup will be interesting.

What is back, Top Gear? It airs on Sunday here but was due for a May 8th return. Lots of trouble with the ill fated Cenotaph stunt and the PR for Evans seems to go from bad to worse.

The show is dead.

Possible. Mat Leblanc plays the same character in all TV shows.

it will be interesting to see how Joey goes in this.

I will watch but only in the hope it turns out to be the stinking pile of dog poo that everyone predicts. Why the luvvies at the BBC keep thinking they can recoup some of the £50m per year they've lost by throwing money at this crap is beyond me.

The viewing figures might be ok for the first series but I'm sure once Grand Tour starts, the BBC will have a 'difficult' decision regarding the 2nd series.

I'm not so sure.

Given its only (grand tour) will be online, how well can it rate.

We cant get amazon prime here to watch tv shows. Yet.

It will be torrent overload.

Now if amazon sell it to ch9 or sbs well thats a different story.

Not really sure how aussies will be able to watch it legally.

Anyone?

Going to tune in briefly to see just how crap it will be. Comes across as overhyped, poorly produced, try-hard, formulaic rubbish, with little chemistry between the hosts .... but I will make my own mind up.

Am more interested in the IOM TT racing and reviews this week and next - a sport which Health & Safety should have closed down years ago, but they simply built a bigger chapel!!!

There have been numerous reports and stories here about the ongoing issues. They've two key production members walk ( one a producer ). The cast members don't seem to get on, although most of this centers around Evans and LeBlanc, the others don't seem to exist any more.

The studio audience left early after so many re-takes they got bored and said the hosts just weren't funny.

The bits I've seen, they've been to Eastern Europe ( yawn), they raced Reliant Robins ( 3 wheeled cars) , had a test drive with Jenson Button, a desert race and the Cenotaph muscle car fcuk up.

I think you truly have to know Evans' persona here and how bullying and bombastic he is. I cannot see this working, Evans is good at live to air stuff but is not a talent for pre recorded segments, and he gets car sick at speed.

There is nothing I've seen reported to suggest this show is in any way breaking new ground, except to have a PC line up of hosts.

I went to a test screening of two segments a couple of weeks ago at a market research agency, in Soho.

The Reliant segment had been done before when Clarkson went to Sheffield, although this one had Joey Tribiani playing the only character he knows, Joey Tribiani. He is rubbish. Boring and monotonous.

The other segment was the drive with Jenson Button and someone like him should be hosting the show.

Contrived, formulaic and rammed together in quick order as though to prove a point that Clarkson hasn't won this battle with the BBC. At least with the 2nd iteration of Top Gear (Clarkson, May and Hammond), they developed over years. This one will be like the Australian version - forced and off the air after a season.

And, for the record, I don't judge anything until I've seen it. And Hawaii was awesome.

Never heard of evans

This is the problem. Those that don't know him won't care and those that do (for the most part) can't stand him.

I'm surprised there is no Amazon Prime in Oz? What I did wonder about though was on Amazon Prime you still have to pay extra for 'Premium shows' (so my sister tells me, we don't have it). I wonder if GT will be one of these?

Probably best describes as "someone like Darryl Somers" (i..e someone who appeals to a section of society but the rest of society think he's a nob).

He's quite good on radio in scripted shows and has some very nice Ferraris, but that's not going to be enough to make me want to watch given what I've seen.

OK, it's done.

There is absolutely zero chemistry between Evans and LeBlanc, everything seems forced.

The in car commentary is a direct copy of Clarkson and Hammond, including the,,,,,pregnant pauses.

Super slow mo editing exactly the same.

Stars in a car was painful and too long.

Top Gun segment was absurd and I could not understand very much from Schmidt over the engine noise.

The 'challenges' looked like something that was found in the 'discard bin'.

The Brownlees are dead to me.

LeBlanc comes off better than I thought and the segments with just him were a bit better.

Verdict: I'd rather drink an anchovy milkshake that's been left in the sun than tune in next week.

Top Gear had been going long before Clarkson et al took the reigns hadn't it? What was it like in those days? While it was technically a show showcasing new cars etc, it really was, to me, a show about 3 mates having the time of their life! I mean, who didn't want their job (and pay packets)? So if it existed prior, I get them introducing new hosts etc. But if it was just the vehicle or those 3, then I would struggle to see how it will be successful. Saying that, those 3 ruined it for anyone else.

I still think the bbc did what they had to do. Too many rich prima donnas get away with what they want, or acting like dicks.

It did exist Goughy but in a very different format. Quite stifled and very 'twee' and inoffensive. Back then they also did motorbike reviews. There was show on Oz tv years ago called something like 'The Car Show' and wasn't dissimilar to that. I suppose you could say it wad entertaining in a factual way and wasrobably popular because there wasn't much else

Ike it.

The original show was well past its use by date though as it failed to move with an audience that wanted more. Clarkson was a junior presenter IIRC and put everything he owned, including his house on the line to keep the show going when the BBC were going to axe it.

It was a car show for car enthusiasts which gradually morphed into a banal comedy show that appealed to the masses. It worked, to a point, because of the chemistry of May, Hammond & JC, but the last few seasons were very tired and old. Today we are going to race old tractors then we're going to blow up a caravan... It's going to be nigh on impossible for anyone to come along and make that kind of crap amusing. I think they would have been better off returning to grass roots Top Gear. It's a car show, not a comedy show.

I didn't mind it actually.

I just don't know why the host Chris has to yell all the time. He has a microphone on his shirt.

leblanc was good. I liked him. Actually the more I watched him the more I liked.

Yeah and it's great for people that are genuinely interested in cars, if you can stand that blonde chicks hideous laugh. I think it's about getting the balance right. TG used be 70% cars 30% comedy and towards the end it had virtually turned into a comedy show. Their worst moment was a 20mins segment of playing a game of conkers with 2 caravans. Just banal.

Even as a serious car guy and even removing that terrible woman, Fifth Gear was just plain awful, boring and noooooooooooope, screw that. TG in it's second iteration with Clarkson started as 70% cars and 30% cocking about.... then it morphed to three idiots cocking about, which is infinetly more interesting. The sole only person who can pull off dry, busload of facts and big skids car show is Chris Harris. Who has been relegated to the B-Team of Extra Gear.

This verison of Top Gear has to compete with web shows like Mighty Car Mods and Roadkill. And ooooh boy it's not looking good at all. Let alone whatever The Grand Tour turns out to be.

I must admit it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It seems like they need a third and probably fourth host as well. Definitely not a disaster. Far better than Australian Top Gear. I think the ball is squarely in the other three's court now.

But as a car enthusiast, you got a lot more from 5th gear. I want to know how fast a 370Z goes and how well it goes against an Audi TT, for example. 5th gear will tell you that, Top Gear will have an Audi TT racing against a helicopter across Europe, no mention of the cars abilities, just jackassery between JC, May & Hammond, ending with them in a pub taking the piss out of each other. It's no longer a car show, it's a comedy show. And that's why Chris Evans hasn't been able to replicate what JC and co did, he's not that funny and you can't copy someone elses humour, people will see through it. They would be better off starting from scratch a car show, with a little bit of wackiness and build on that.

Episode 2

260,000 pound Mclaren with Jenson Button putting it in the grass amusing.

Chris Evans is rubbing me the wrong way. I am still liking Matt co hosting.

Keeping the same format is okay with me too.

Amusing they went to South Africa when the old 3 are releasing their show there.
