Why are they delaying the start- surely the earlier the better wind wise ?!?!

Rest of the course not ready perhaps?

How is it safe to swim one lap but not 2?

My question too.

I'm looking at the footage..what a joke.

The commentators; "You can even see the IM buoy, getting moved around in the water by the waves" - really?

Just saw some pics on Facebook - I guess it must be worse in real life than the pics i have seen so far - looks flatter than most Ocean swims.

Bummer for those racing - sucks not to have the whole distance - especially first timers

Standing on pier. Decent wind but swim doesn't look too bad. Usual bay rollers. Going to be a shitfight for a 1.9k with 2000+ starting in one wave.

@claytonfettell

Ok..a large pack of swimmers seemed to have missed cans coming in. Please tell me action will be taken?? #IMMelbourne

Obviously it isn't Fettell himself tweeting such things during the race, but interesting.......

Fair to say there are a few unhappy coaches\associates at the moment.

1 lap swim short of 1.9 km?

I am here and it is an absolute joke. It is choppy but for anyone that has done an ocean swim (which should be everyone in the race) it is totally fine. I really feel for Fettell as it has thrown his game plan right out the window which is unfair.

Bike is going to be challenging for sure!

If a Kona slot comes down to a small amount of time and i was the person missing out to someone who I would usually have a clear advantage over in the swim, I would be peeved.

It is a disappointing decision.

If they are worried about headwinds then move the start up the beach.

There are harder races around the world. A lot of first timers are going to feel cheated.

Safety first I guess.

Maybe they should shorten the bike because I think the winds on the freeway will result in more risk.

Athlete tracker showing splits as 3.9 km swim and pace for such.

CatCam just knocked out 55s/100m apparently :)

The wind is horrid out there, the bike is going to be very tough, though it's meant to be dropping later. Yay to Jacinta Collier, first AG female out of the swim!

Tri Alliance has a swim start video on facebook. What a bunfight! But agreed, it doesn't look that bad (I'd drown though! :D )

Back to the important news... reports just in that Otter has been chicked in the swim by Simone. Could be a long year in that household if this keeps up.

19min for the lead swimmers in 'hazardous' conditions - was it even 1500m???

Athlete tracker showing 1500m

Luke Bell just whipped through East Link tunnel that's towards the end of the bike loop at 72 km/ hour. He'll make the turnaround in a few minutes, leading the group of six that are out in front.

Swim start was a mess

2000 people fighting for a right turn 300m away

Tide pushing people to the left

Some got pushed so far left they were going AWAY from th turn. One guy got rescued

Some people back to beach, ran right up the beach to try again

Would have been a few swim dnfs

While those waves and chop would not have made it fun, from a swimmers point of view, it is a bit unfair, it does not look to be a safety risk, but only those there can tell us.

I did a tri that was on Lake Erie and the waves there were ridiculous making Melbourne look luxurious
