    Melb to Warrnambool bike race

It's been splashed around the media today - the 262km Melb to Warrnie was run and won last Saturday. First placed male in A grade bagged $2,000 whilst the first placed female was given a pat on the head and $100. As a comparison, the first D Grade rider won $550. Fair? Interesting facts: entry fee was $135; only 1 female entered the event; winning mens time was 7:00hrs; winning female time was 8:01hrs. Generally the field is made up of very strong Club riders - not your classic 'Elite' field so-to-speak. On the Sunday they hold the Shipwreck Coast Classic where the field is Elite and both men and women receive equal prize money. The women's field is quite a good size in this event and featured some strong international level riders. (It should be noted that the Shipwreck Coast Classic is one of the rare cycling events where men and women received equal prize money.)
