  1. Or have the $$ to do all the qualifiers! And there appears to be a website now; https://townsville.triathlon.org/ https://townsville.triathlon.org/schedule/
  2. The yo-yoing continues (and not the edible kind). 78 to 77 to 78 to 76 to 77 to 76, but down overall... I've ordered the recommended reading, Atomic Habits, but won't be changing any habits until I've read it in case I do it wrong 😉
  3. I try and not have any when training and load up on race day. Timing will depend on the race distance, but generally; 0 to 3 hr race - 200mg (2 No-Doz) about an hour before the start. Any earlier and I get real jittery. 3 hrs plus race - 200mg at the half way point and then Coke as required. When I looked into this stuff about 5 years ago it was suggested I take 2-3mg/kg as tolerated. My weight hovers from low to high 70’s so 2 No Doz is enough. I’ve tried Red Bull during races, but the other “stuff” in it gives me the squirts super fast. Post Race, I normally will allow myself Caffeine for a day or two until I fast again. I am a constantly offending Coke addict once I get started, so cant afford to be on it all the time.
  4. Down 1kg this week... Had to run/walk/shuffle 100km on Saturday to do that. Don't think i'll be doing that every week for the next 3 months 😞
  5. No uniform for me, they finalised the team a long way out and before the uniform deadline had occurred. Something like 3 months prior to the actual event. If anyone pulled out closer to the event, I assume they either weren't replaced or they offered it to someone who was racing the other distance on offer. Besides, they'd already made their money off the withdrawal....
  6. Found the team, I was 5th reserve. Looks like the first three got a call-up before the event, so reserve 4 Paul Dineen was the next in line... RESERVE LIST Jonathan Dawson M 35-39 ACT Performance Triathlon Coaching (PTC Canberra) Reserve 1 Brendan Wall M 35-39 NSW Clarence valley triathlon club Reserve 2 Aaron Buchan M 35-39 SA lakers Reserve 3 Paul Dineen M 35-39 NSW Newcastle Tri club Reserve 4 David Froude M 35-39 VIC Knox Reserve 5
  7. From memory I was one of the reserves in the 35-39 age group for the sprint race. Never thought I would have been affected by someone doping for something I do for a bit of fun.
  8. I’ve been twice in 2009 and 2011. With a bit of planning and research of the route you can make it manageable, lots of waiting, but c’mon it’s free! In 2009 I saw three stages; a flat sprint finish, a TTT and the start of another stage. The sprint finish was at La Grande Motte and I spent about 5 hours standing around in the sun getting burnt and dehydrated whilst I watched the caravan and pre-race procession roll through. Snagged some sponsor hats and products etc as well. I was near the finish, so they had big screens showing the action (in French). I made friends with some other Aussies, so the time went fairly quickly and saw Cavendish nail the sprint. The next day was the TTT in Montpellier and after looking at the route it was possible to watch half the teams near the start, run about 4-5km to the finish in time to see most of the teams finish as they took a more circuitous route than me. We started on a nasty little corner where a few teams came unstuck and once again showing the Aussie colours drew some new friends to keep things entertaining. Seeing a team go past every few minutes, was far more interesting than a big group finish where only the first 10 are trying to win. A few days of travel found me in Barcelona for the start of another stage. The actual race start was a bit tame, as everyone just pushed off like a bunch rolling out on a lazy Sunday. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was anti-climatic. The value in the start was being able to wander the team areas and see the riders up close pre-race, hear the interviews and maybe grab a photo. In 2011 I was living in London and when it looked like Cadel was going to win I made a spur of the moment decision on the Friday night to take the Chunnel and see it in person. I was on the Eurostar heading over whilst the ITT was happening, so I was on the phone to Mum and Dad in Australia as they updated me on the splits as they happened. Spent the majority of the next day standing on a fence on des Champs-Elysees, trying not to drink so I didn’t lose my spot to go to the toilet. The riders rolled around 8 times, I was able to spot Cadel in yellow briefly before Tina Arena sang the anthem. Expect long days, sunburn and to be dehydrated, but the atmosphere made up for it for me. I plan on going to a mountain stage next time I’m over there and then I would think I’ve seen all the tour has to offer from the roadside.
  9. The Torrens river trail is close to the airport. It starts at West Beach which is about 3-4km away or you could get on where it crosses Tapleys Hill Rd which is about half that distance. From there you can head East as far as Adelaide city and beyond. The Bike Path from West Beach heading down South to Glenelg apparently goes a fair way, But I've never been that far.
  10. I entered the Gatorade Triathlon Series in Victoria for the 2008/09 season. Race 1 was 10 years ago to this weekend and In true Victorian tradition, it was turned into a duathlon! As was Race 2 in December, so I had to wait until Race 3 in January 2009 at Sandringham to pop the cherry. I'm up to 87 races now, from Minis to IM's in 6 of the 8 Australian states and territories and in 4 countries, great way to see the world!

    Garmin VO2max

I was tested at 63ml/min/kg at Vic Uni. Highest I've had the Garmin is 59ml/min/kg. Based on my actual times in that table I should be around 54ml/min/kg, I guess I should be faster than I am or I don't like pain. All values based on running.
  12. Done 7, but only cracked 13 hrs once... 2012 Melbourne (13:52) - Underestimated how much training I needed to do, gut issues for 6 weeks prior to race day 2012 Port Mac (13:36) - 6 Weeks after the first one so wasn't fully recovered 2013 Melbourne (14:48) - Blew out a hip flexor and walked the last 22kms 2014 Melbourne (11:59) - Got this one right 2015 Melbourne (13:57) - Personal issues led to sporadic training, cramping from 4km into the run 2016 Cairns (15:16) - Didn't train consistently, gave up on the run and walked a fair bit once I had established I would make cutoff 2017 Hawaii (13:23) - Took it easy to enjoy the day To sum it up, my bike strength sucks which compromises the run and I don't do enough training to be anything other than a 12-15 hr finisher.

    Target CTL

    I should add that I averaged 15 hrs/week for the 23 weeks.

    Target CTL

For an Ironman last year over a 23 week plan using Joe Friel's Periodisation... After two weeks off training, I started Week 1/Baseline @ 40 After the Base Period/Week 12 I was @ 100 During the Build Period/Weeks 13-20 I ranged between 115-125 By race day after a three week taper, I was back to 100 Some Notes; - I included all swim, bike, run and strength training sessions. - I just followed the plan I was given, I wasn't trying to hit certain CTL numbers and didn't adjust sessions to do so.
  15. I took a spot via the eBay auction last year, didn't pay as much as this one went for, but it was significant. Still conflicted about the whole thing, even 6 months after I finished the race. However, I don't regret doing it. I will write a review one day and post it in race reports.
  16. Same experience as other members here... Chronic ankle injuries from basketball to the point I would roll them by walking on uneven ground. Started trail running and walking as prep for OXFAM in 2010. Found that an unintended benefit was improving the strength and balance around the ankle joint. Rolled a couple of times early on, but find that now if I go over, my proprioception kicks in and I'm able to correct it, before I sprain it. Also do weekly balance work on a BOSU ball. Haven't rolled them in years, including at basketball.
  17. I never train in groups and very rarely ride on a road bike in a race situation. Normally I'm in the top 20-25% of my age group for the run, but I found the surging to try and stay on wheels after the hairpins and going up the small inclines cooked my legs and my run suffered accordingly (top 33%). I did the Yarrawonga race and got into no drafting packs all race, but managed to hold on for a few km's in Canberra, so I guess that's some small improvement. Will need to adjust my training if I continue to do D/L (unlikely).
  18. I'll be a first timer at Kurnell next weekend... Any tips from the wise?
  19. How many Ironman races will that make for you Ironnerd?
