Geez my back hurts just looking at that riding position. Looks like a very small frame?

Man......we are not playing well. Let's hope Johnson's isn't too bad........Well we have played better that we normally do.
Been at a 50th all day...trying to catch up on all the goss from NZ. So who won the wheels (it has been very entertaining reading!)

Skel - still waiting on official number of finishers. At the moment it's either Ronnie or Steely!

aaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww CRAP
the video feed is gone before the last guy finished...................
odd or even??
did he make it???
it was close. Now will have to wait for them to publish the complete list.
which should sort out the 1 sec. timing discrepancy
Bourne
Mar 5 2005, 09:16 PM
at this stage there is 2 different timings given for the winners, so I hope they will be quick with a full listing.
Athlete results times
1st number = ??
2nd No = Cameron Brown - 08:22:05
3rd No = Jo Lawn - 09:30:14
Steely - 054
Ronnie - 154
-------------------------------------------------------
Leader Board times
1st number = ??
2nd No = Cameron Brown - 08:22:04
3rd No = Jo Lawn - 09:30:13
Froggo - 043
GSP - 143
A new update has just popped up saying 1115 athletes crossed the line (1 was 2 minutes two late so has much as he's a finisher, he's not an "official finisher". Fingers crossed that it was 1115 and that the times are what is recorded in the athlete's finder.

Mar 5 2005, 09:25 PM
thanks GSP, I just spotted that myself and was about to post it.
that guy was the last one out on the course to.

1115 athletes crossed the Taupo finish line of the 21st Bonita Ironman New Zealand Triathlon by the mid night deadline - and there was just one more as Japanese student, Shintaro Oda, who made it home, but just two minutes after the deadline...
|
Ok that makes it sound that the 1115 where official finishers and that other guy was the 1116th.
that would make it an odd no therefore = 1
so at this stage it looks like either 154(Ronnie) or 143(GSP)
provisional results of course and will wait for confirmation,

Excellent race thread as usual. Trannies with IML going is THE place to watch an Ironman

Thanks Bourne
Congrats to everyone who raced, sounded like a day that progressively got pretty tough.
On JimmyC & Vernon's chances of qualifying for Kona, it looks like with the tough conditions, times in general were a bit slower than expected, so they're still in it with a shot I think. When do the category results come online?

Hi there all.
Just finished reading through this post. Thanks for all the support and encouragement.
Where do I begin?
MAN THAT WAS A MASACRE!
I really believe if that had been my first IM I would have pulled out at 5km into the run.
OLT warned me, Kym warned me, Kanagara warned me 4 days ago again but that last 20K of the ride was the hardest slog I have ever experienced. It just destroyed me. I have no clue how I managed to run/shuffle at all through the marathon.
To summarise the day
Swim uneventful- just rolled it over and enjoyed it. I would like to actually have the guts to swim in the pack one of these days instead of acting as the tugboat for other people though. Happy with the time but room for improvement for what I think I can put together.
Bike- Lap 1 Awesome- low HR, food going down, powering in a good line of 5 strong riders. We are just chomping through people as we head back into town. Everyone is playing fair, taking turns and staying legal. I look at the clock and think I am easilly primed to go sub 5 on the bike
Lap 2 -my cohorts decide to hammer the steep section up SH5/Napier highway. Coach jimmy tells me no way keep the HR down and wait for the return trip. Going out tons of back pain (2nd Nuerofen popped) but still motoring. Wind is across and I think good it will come behind for the return trip. Turn around at Rokvegas and within about 10K I know we are going to get masacred. Every short climb I was out of the saddle and using muscles I didnt know existed. Wind straight into me. My typical low cadence grind style becomes pretty ineffective at dealing with all the decerellarations with the wind. At the big hill at 170K I use the SMALL CHAIN RING - and the last time I used that was 1974. Things were bad and people were streaming past me. Feeling sick- I try to force down more food and Pro4 but all I want to do is get off my bike and die. From 150K on I had serious doubts about whether I was going to be able to run at all. My back was screaming -Nuerofen no 3 - I really need to get this sorted for the future. Finally town reappears and I throw my demon possessed bike away.
Long time in the tent- looking for an excuse not to go out there. Im crawling- 6m/k at best . My back feels like I've just given birth. Never every been in this much pain running. At 5K I walk up Rainbow Pt hill and start to think about heading to my accomodation which is right there. I "negotiate" with myself...."just go to 10K and then lets talk again about pulling out" I ran into Steve who I ran with at GCHIM to a PB. He is really struggling and I try to help him along for my own sake as well- I did not want to be alone. At 7K Steve pulls the ripcord- he's out. So then I think ..."its got to be tough for everyone today- perhaps if we shuffle on -some more will drop out" ---Sure enough carnage everywhere- pros and Ag'ers at a standstill. I walk every aid station and run like a broken arse between them. At 15K I get a brief patch of goodness where I start running more like 4.50/K this lasts until about 24K. Then its back to 5.30/k as soon as I hit the hills. At 30K things feel good again and aware of some others fading I try to take it up to 4.30/k. I hold this until about 36K mark and then the quads are shot. Im crawling again 6/k and walking/stopping every station to ice my quads and hope they dont lock up. Every step is like breaking out of cement. I am not enjoying it in any sense of the word and my mind is over caring what place Im in. What a relief to get across the line
Reflection- generally pleased that I kept going and salvaged a reasonable time. Hard to say I am not dissappointed but I clearly made a few bad decisions during the day. Also I am dissapointed I gave in at times as it cost me 6-8 mins through the day which is the difference between being in the slots and out of them Its a tough course, I enjoyed it. Now all I need this morning is for 3-4 dudes to decide its not a good idea to go to Hawaii this year. Cross your fingers. Cheers JC

Jimmy is 11th in AG so could be a good chance for a Kona Slot on roll-down. His AG had around 15% of the field so could have up to 8 or 9 spots.
Vernon is 13th in AG with 147 in category so maybe 6 or 7 spots in category - it ill be tough for him I think.

Best of roll down luck for Jimmy and Vernon.
I had a text from Vernon and as suspected he did have a problem. His front mech cable broke 5kms into the ride, he blew 4 mins with a mechanic but rode 175kms in the smal ring. He said his legs were shot come the run. His txt said 'on to Forster' so it sounds like he's not confident

Next time you're down the pool we'll do a few race specific sessions. I'll swim alongside you and try to push you into the lane rope, you can fight back. After that, you'll have no worries in the pack

wow - what an events - was that fun or what. Tell you what though - I think I am more exhausted today than I was last year when I raced it.
Results for us were unbeliveable. We had a HUGEEEEEEEEEEE campaign involving over 130 athletes and after last tonight's charity auction we had raised just under $200,000. Incredible. ..... For those of you to see where this money goes you can read about it at our website
http://www.breath4cf.co.nz. 75% of this total was rasied purley by the athletes them selves, the rest came from public donations, cahrity auction, motels and taupo retailers etc. This is an incredible result and will help change many kids lives.
also - - Cathy Morgan (CLM) got a Kona slot yesterday- well done Kathy!
Scott Johnson - our double Lung Transplantee did him self proud but sadly didn't finish. He made the bike cutt off but was taken off the course at 13kms into the run and back to the medical tent. Scott wont give up, he has already confirmed he plans to do Ironman Florida and is considering coming back next year to finish his ""unfinished business." Just by strating this race he has inspired and tocuhed many people.
Ok - off for my recovery week now........

I've fixed up the results table so the run splits make a little more sense.
First timing Split was taken after 13.1km, the second split time is at the finish line a further 29.1km.
Obviously totalling 42.2km.

Hi everyone
What a couple of days. Bit of a roller coaster. Yes, very lucky to get the roll down spot. They announced that there were 4 roll downs so I knew I needed someone not to be there. So they call the first name, "Here" - cheers and clapping, 2nd name - cheers and clapping, then, from Germany (noone comes all the way from Germany then doesn't take their slot I was thinking) so and so - cheers and clapping. Fourth name called - silence, called again - silence. From Australia, Vernon Kringas - cheers and clapping!
While I was lucky to get the slot, I was feeling a little bit disappointed because I had to ride all but 5km in the small chain ring and wasted 4 minutes or so figuring out with a mechanic that I couldn't fix it. My gear cable broke - it severed at the place it goes into the downtube (Cervelo P3). Couldn't believe it. On the way out of town there are some very fast sections where I had to spin like a madman or coast. I kept telling myself that it might make for a better run - but now I don't think so. First lap was good - 2:47 including the wasted time and my Hr average was below 130. Second lap was a different story. Legs felt weird and combined with the wind my bike time blew out. I even felt my quads wanting to cramp - never had that before. I suspect there is ssomething with spinning at a higher cadence than you have trained for, for extended periods.
Run felt terrible from the get go although I put in several reasonable kms but I knew it wouldn't last. After about 4km I heard on the speaker that Keiren Doe was coming second as he headed out for the second lap. I looked up and there he was in front of me. I ran passed him and his bicycle escort so I knew he wasn't going to get on the podium today!
The run was miserably tough but my head was in a better space this time. I was resigned to the pain and the duration. Of course you want to walk - I told myself - it's an Ironman. I actually felt very sleepy and just wanted to lie down and take a nap. I closed my eyes for a few seconds and felt that loovveely feeling when you are about to nod off. Wiered. Anyway I kept plugging away. AVAGO gave me great encouragement - thanks mate. I think I now know who Big Chris is as I am sure it was he in a Trannies cap who said hello. I repeatd the advice of my friend/mentor/coach, Darren Taylor, who said no matter what happens keep going because you never know what can happen at a roll down. So I kept going but stopped looking at my watch (still noting the deteriorating km splits but not the overall time).
Anyway, finally into the last km - my legs were trashed and I knew I was doing them damage for the last 15kms - but now I was close. Then someone in my age group passes me with 500m to go! Fuck! No one had passed me all day. He was going well. I tried to lift my pace telling myself to try to keep the gap from getting too big and maybe I could conjure up a sprint - but I wasn't confident I had anything left. He keeps looking around as he slowly draws away (up Tongariro St for those who know it) and he passes another guy who looks at his calf and reacts! Fuck another one in my age group. Then I notice protagonist No. 2 is the support guy from Epic Camp who I joked with for 12 days about how we were battling for the same Hawaii slot! My body reacted without being told. I sprang into a sprint and took off. I passed both of them at 100 miles an hour about 20 metres before the U turn into the finish chute. Were they reacting? - I couldn't tell but I couldn't take the chance. I kept sprinting down the finish chute trying to get a glimpse of them but couldn't turn my head too far. I was careful not to stumble on the little dip in the middle of the finishing chute - a forward roll now would have been unfortunate. I hoped my wife, Rosemary, wasn't expecting a high 5. So I finished 6 seconds in front of my Epic mate, Pete. I get the slot he doesn't. My finishing photo shows the three of us in the finishing chute - all vying for the last Hawaii slot as it turned out.
There is no way you can make sense of who gets in and who doesn't when you are on the fringes. I feel for Pete who actually recovered from a nasty crash that day.
Thanks evryone for the encouragement and congratulations. Hats off to Jimmy C for finishing in a such a good time when his world was falling apart. I am sure that toughness grows each time you exhibit it. Mental toughness is part of the complete athlete and how else can you get it? Well done to all the other Trannies who battled it out in very tough conditions on the bike. The faseter guys and pros would have missed most of the fun because the wind wipped up late and got worse.
Cheers
Vernon
PS just for the record, Bjorn A. didn't hammer at Epic Camp. He was actually very conservative as it was his first week back in training. Sure he won the short races but they were short. I saw Bjorn and Clas in the recovery area but didn't ask them what went on because I am sue they get that enough. I do know though that their main race is Roth. Maybe they cannot say too much about being underprepared for a race because of sponsorship. Tricky.
