Very sad news to report that my friend, Tanya was killed this morning while training in Cairns.....please be safe.

THE Cairns sports community is in shock following the death of Cairns Taipans statistician and ironman competitor Tanya Roneberg this morning.
The 37-year-old was riding along the Captain Cook Highway around 7.15am this morning when her bicycle was involved in a collision with a utility at Thomatis Creek between the Yorkeys Knob and Holloways Beach roundabouts.

The male driver of the utility is now assisting police with inquiries.

Ms Roneberg, a legal secretary with McDonnell’s Law in Cairns, competed in her first half Ironman event last year in Cairns and had only recently pulled out of this year’s event.

A former Smithfield State High School student, she had recently taken up power lifting and had also started studying to become a personal trainer.

News of her passing reverberated through the Cairns community, many of knew Ms Roneburg for her place on the sideline of the Cairns Taipans match each week compiling match statistics.

Friends and family have poured in to pay their respects on social media.

Ms Roneberg's brother, Brett, is a former Olympic silver medallist for baseball in 2000, while her parents Geoff and Sharon reside at Trinity Beach.

Police are calling for witnesses to the crash to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Cairns Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

It made the radio news out here the middle of NSW and I thought of you immediately. Glad it wasn't you, but it's very sad for her friends and family.

Thanks for posting, it's terrible hearing of these things and wondering if it might be someone you know. It's also a good reminder of the need to take care when out, not that we can always avoid these things. Also make sure that your loved ones know how you feel about them, as this could happen to any one of us.

No words can express my anger if that is the case Rod. I have heard other information, but will let the truth come out in it's own time.

I haven't ridden for 18 months, and I really think I will now sell my bike.

So sorry to hear, skel.

Like others, the first person I thought of was you. Not necessarily because I thought it might have been you, but I was worried that it was someone you knew. Sadly, that's the case.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of sadness in Cairns when we get there in a few weeks. Let's hope the community can come through this and maybe some changes can come about.

Those round-a-bouts are large and busy most times. This sort of news really does your head in.

Terrible news. One of the Port Macquarie local riders got cleaned up at the roundabout near Maccas today. Banged up pretty bad the broken bones and punctured lung but he will be fine.

Too much of it happening it seems. I'm thinking about getting back into racing next season but I will be hooking the bike up to the trainer for all training sessions.

What a crock of sh%t - bailed.

A MAN involved in a crash where a cyclist died early Saturday has been charged.
The 19-year-old Mt Isa man allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.076 per cent.
Tanya Roneberg died after the collision on the Captain Cook Highway around 7.15am on Sunday.
Police allege the cyclist was struck when the utility was heading northbound between the Holloways Beach and Yorkeys Knob intersections.
The man was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and one count of drink driving.
He was bailed to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on June 17.

The sad thing is that stretch of highway is about as good as it gets with wide shoulders and bike lanes through the roundabouts.

I read about that. Initially I thought it might be because of the cycle lanes at the roundabouts that split people off fom the traffic, hen invite a left hook at the entry, but now it looks like an elbow shave one wrong.
Having been shaved a few ones recently, this oes not make me feel safer.
Best thoughts to all and any friends and family.

What a tragedy. I am sure we will all follow the outcome of this investigation knowing that there, but for the grace of God, is me lying on the slab at the mortuary.

Personally, I would like the police, the judicial system and the politicians to feel the indignation of the triathlon and cycling community on this one. An attack by one drunken driver on one of us is like an attack on all of us. Generally, if we cyclists and the driving public adhere to the road rules, we have some element of safety. But there is no accounting for the drunken idiot - and there are plenty of them out there.

I think it is time to make our collective voices heard.
