Update on course from last week.
The Swim: Lake is looking OK right now and is open and trouble free. It looks clearer than I remember, but 80 days to go still...and it is the middle of winter (Hang on, I'm supposed to be promoting it!!!) Compared to some other swims it is indeed clearer; and we'll not put you in there unless it's absolutley safe! Water safety by the way; think big numbers of kayaks and even a medical emergency response boat! The Ride; The easiest course we've ever had in Canberra. It's a tad long; but if you want soft there's plenty of alternatives!! As a course it has it all; it's actually mainly flat, has some fast and technical down hill, a climb, repeated three times (always seems steep by lap three!) and in between there's some fast and great surface snooth tarmac roads... Take away the 2008 winds and rain and it's usually pretty fast. We can't make it shorter without carving it up - if you want a PB just go HARD! Again there's plenty of medical and a great aid station crew (manned by the scouts!) each lap! The Run: A sweet two lapper, with one small rise only and otherwise it's as flat as. In 2009 we'll be the first event to use the new Captain Cook lakeside pathway - 3-4m of superb running surface for around half the lap! A run to enjoy after pushing the bike. Check out the aid stations - The ACT CLubs are usually compete for the best aid station; check Bilbys, Vikings and others - and they'll cheer you on big time!! Oh! And welcome to the Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman! www.canberrahalf.com (here endeth the ad!) Summation: A personal challenge and a REAL triathlete's course! If you've done well in Canberra, you've done well!! If you can make it a PB on this course - then you have long term and hi-cred bragging rights too! Canb HIM was my first too, in 2007 - poured rain but I got 5:46 with serious ITB knee pain from 4km into the run, several piss stops, going nice & easy into the Coppins descent in the rain while others fell off going too fast, and went to the change tent at both T1 & T2 (it was before i worked out it's better to just wear cycling knicks & a tri top with pockets throughout the whole race (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) ).
Have since done Yeppoon HIM (much flatter bike course - but that does not make it easier) and Port HIM (bike about as hard as Canb IMO). The climb out of Coppins is a bit tough if you only train on the flatlands, but just keep a similar effort up the hills as you do on the flats up there & don't try to hammer it & it's OK (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) The run is a piece of cake - the easiest of the 3 HIMs i've done by far (except for the knee) The swim was OK - wave starts so not all in with 600 others like Port (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) Might do it again this year and also the Sri Chinmoy if things pan out (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

Anyone can do Canberra HIM. I did it as my first triathlon last year (08) just to finish on a couple of months training. Made for a tough day at the office but easy enough to get over the line. I dont think too many take up Triathlon as they thought it would be easy...
I was only wearing a tri suit on the swim but I was always wondering who it was that was in the Speedos... This post has been edited by Voodz: Sep 8 2009, 05:30 PM |

Nick what happens if you decide the water isn't ok for the swim - is there an alternative or does it turn into a duathlon? Has this ever happened? Thanks, Tricia. |

This thread has got me all excited, I just entered Canberra, not gunna let any little hills and a long course bother me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Me too, well going to enter when it's pay day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Haven't done a HIM before, or even an olympic distance one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) So will be err interesting. So all this talk of it being a hard course is a bit concerning but what the hell still time to train for it !!!!!! |

Thanks, Tricia. water quality in the lake should be a bit better than the last couple of years, they have finished the development around manuka (they filled part of the lake in)... havent had issues with it before christmas before as far as i can remember........ Oh and no swim is fine by this shit house swimmer! will let you know when i swim end to end in november (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

Coming down Tricia - we can usually warm it up a little?
We've never had a problem with the lake quality in December, though we did have a major scare a couple of years ago that was man made... As in any race, we have a number of contingencies in place to cover a few known problems, and a few theoretical problems as well given these are interesting times in which to be running races. These contingencies include shifting the swim, shortening the swim to no swim at all if it is too dangerous. A known fact in the life these days... but unlikely given the stats, to happen in Canberra in December. |
