On the weekend I saw an ad for a "new old stock" Headway helmet and also someone selling a Teschner and some Velocity rims.

It got me thinking of all the Aussie brands that have come and gone over the years. I had a headway helmet back in the day, pretty sure Welchy wore an Airflow to his Kona win, there was a time, in the steel tube days, when most bike shops could hook you up with a custom frame from a multitude of local frame builders. My first road bike was a Europa, made in Sydney but Bundy and Hopkins were also making frames just a short drive from my place and you could talk to the guy that was building your bike.

Then when aluminium became the material of choice there were aero Tri frames available stock or custom from a few local manufacturers, including guys like Peter Teschner who was building road and Tri frames for world champions and pro tour teams. There was also Evolution and Curloo as well.

It looks like Velocity is still going but has decamped to the US, these wheels were a staple of the Aussie market for many years with their Aerohead rims.

Cannibal is one bucking the trend and still going strong despite some pretty fierce competition.

So what brands do you remember? Any still going locally?

Big news overnight, Ariarne Titmus stormed over Kate Ledecky in the last 50m of the 400m freestyle to take the win. First time Ledecky has been beaten in that event in a major meet I think.

Also, Mack Horton refused to share the podium with drug cheat Sun Yang after coming second to him in the 400m freestyle. And the Chinese trolls on social media are getting into Mack already. They make some very funny comments.

I've left this to the last minute as the problem didn't really occur to me until recently... When I ride, I ride in cycling kit so have pockets at the back of my shirt. My tri kit doesn't have any pockets. I'm about to do a HIM this weekend and have realised I have nowhere to put the cliff bars that I want to consume on the bike. There is no room on my top tube to tape anything (I have a small bag there with the spare tyre, and I can't really tape a cliff bar there anyway), I have a double bottle holder off the back of my saddle that will be full, and a bottle between the tribars on the front.

Any suggestions how I can carry these cliff bars so that they are accessible when I need them?

Not sure what it is but it looks like a bit more activity on Tri forum rather than sandbox last 7-14 days. This has seen me want to be more active on this forum. (Maybe IJ doing the Tri forum a favour over there.)
A couple of questions:
1. How do we keep the momentum?

	2. How do we stop driving those with a lot to add away? It appears to be a long time ago since a new thread would get equivalent TriGold status, have we covered it all already?

I was listening to Scientific Triathlon podcast yesterday with Faris as the guest. He stated the tri suit has been the biggest time saver in Ironman Bike splits since his time, he thinks wheels are about the same, a little on bike, but the big thing is the suit. I then watched Ironman Port Mac 2013 while on the indoor bike this morning for an hour, and the pros were in standard 2 piece tri kits, no one had sleeves or anything flash, most had pockets full of nutrition at the back.

I looked in some websites and Scody claim 9 mins in an Ironman in their AIR suit over a traditional two piece at 230w average powers https://www.scody.com/blog/42_your-questions-answered-sleeved-aero-triathlon-suits-the-way-of-the-future-for-long-course-triathletes.html

So, thoughts in this, what is the suit worth over 180KM? is Faris right?

Sorry for the wall of text to come, I wanted to ensure everything was in context.

After about 3 years of doing stuff all training and getting fat I decided it was time to do something about it and running is the easiest discipline to fit in so 30 days ago I decided I was going to run for at least 30 minutes each day for as long as I could. I have found some mojo in it, got the attitude of my run is going to happen, just a matter of how instead of finding excuses. Ran in 40 degree heat, ran in dust storms, and added a little bit of structure to the week. I have also gone from 103kg to 98kg (still lots to do there)

Currently weekly structure is based on Jack Daniels running paces based of a 24:17 5km I ran a couple of weeks ago.

Monday - 8km at Marathon Pace

	Tuesday- 3 x 5 min @ interval pace with 5 min recovery

Wednesday - 9km Easy Pace Long Run

Thursday - 1km Warm Up, 5km Threshold, 1km cool down

	Friday - 7km Easy

	Saturday - Park Run

	Sunday - 8km Marathon Pace

That ends up being a 45-50km week at the moment and I am working up by 2-3 km per week I am feeling the fatigue in my legs but I am not sure if that is due to the volume of running, I ran a total of 500 km last year and have already done 230 km this year so a fair increase!

My last triathlon was Challenge Shepparton 2016 where I did about 5:30. Short term Goal is a half ironman next summer (not sure which one yet, Geelong is leading at this stage) longer term is iromnan 2-3 years down the track.

So that is the back story. Now the question.

I would like to keep the run volume, but I am not sure 7 sessions a week is sustainable as well as adding swimming and biking. I would like to gradually introduce both of the other disciplines but I am really not sure how to change the above to suit it and keep the volume. Initially I would like to add say 2 x 45 min bike sessions and 2 x 30 min swim to the above and find a way to drop the running back to 5 days a week.

	Any thoughts welcome!

How long should hill repeats be for marathon training? I can't find anything online regarding distances

i have a big problem with excessive sweating and know it’s going to cause problems!!

3 years ago I was left on life support after developing “Gillian barre syndrome” ((Basically the body attacks and destroys the nerve system in the body leaving the average person a cripple for the rest of their lives))

doc’s told me I’m a freak for my recovery, I’m supposed to be dead lol...

Getting to the testing part, I suffer with BADDD sweating due to the nerve damage, I can lose anywhere between 0.5-1L of fluid in a moderate training session. I know this is bad for sodium and electrolytes loss, so I’d love to see what’s happening to my body during the loss and how I can manage it.

	thanks,

Erin Baker is clearly the greatest Kiwi Female Long course athlete of all time.

Cameron Brown / Rick Wells tied for the male.

But Hannah Wells is the new up and coming athlete that only ever gets a podium.

She raced Challenge Wanaka last weekend (2nd to Radka) and then Geelong 70.3 yesterday and totally dominated.

She won West Syd last year.

I'm keen as to see her at Taupo WC later this year.

Not sure if shes done or doing an ironman soon.

So for some data to work with:

The MAF formula would have me training to a 140bpm cap.

My last 1/2 IM average HRs were 167 on the bike and 174 on the run.

The incident is so cruel: Martin was absolutely meticulous about safety, and this has happened on a quiet section of road on a public holiday in the middle of the day. It is difficult to imagine that the driver could not have seen him (unless they simply weren't paying any attention to the road), and impossible to imagine that they could fail to notice that they hit him (I'd guess that Martin + bike weighed 90+ kgs), yet they drove on and left him for dead.

The story has received reasonable coverage in Brisbane, but I'm not sure how much inter-state where the driver could well be from (it happened fairly close to the Qld-NSW border).

As usual, there have been appalling anti-cycling rants on social media. I'm astounded at what people believe is appropriate to say at such time.

We are doing a half Ironman towards the end of the year but are new to the cycling element of triathlons and need to figure out which type of bike to buy.

We are runners and want to know if its worth going straight to a tri bike?
I've heard due to the positioning of the seat on a tri bike, your quads and hamstrings are 'protected' more during the cycle, so that when you need them for the run afterwards, you've not worn them out already.

We have no intention of riding on road normally etc but tri bikes are apparently not great for hills and corners. Some of the ironman routes are flat and fairly straight and others not so much.
Not sure which option to go for and wondered if any one had any experience as a newbie?

Its all about maintaining efficiency in both the bike and run legs for Lionel. Interestingly, he mentioned in passing that he wants to focus on maintaining running form during the marathon, but then said that he has a running limp, so he wasn’t talking about that, rather he wanted to focus on running upright.

So, he knows about the obvious limp, but seems resigned to it. That begs the question - does he have some physical deformity or disability resulting in said limp that can’t be corrected? Anyone know anything about that?

Don't normally give too many free plugs, but Bill form Zero Athletic (formerly Dare2Tri) was pretty good to a lot of Trannys, so I thought he deserved a bit of air time. If you are in the market for a new suit its worth a look.

Its the new Vorgee V-Force VIII

	From Bill:

The process to get the V-Force VIII to market has not been quick. Firstly I have had 15 years of talking to the best triathletes around the world , and as you know Fliss (Flick Abram) went out with Ali and trained in the British high performance center with him for 3 years. I also had a lot to do with 2XU . Plus had the D2T brand with Alex until he wanted to change the rules.

So through that time I had recorded and had ideas of what I wanted in a wetsuit. So when John Vorgias asked me 3 years ago if I was interested in doing a wetsuit for Vorgee, I said yes because I had finished with D2T , and had great ideas of what I wanted in a wetsuit . This wetsuit has taken 2.5 years , 8 prototypes , plenty of testing and racing, to get to bulk production. Before I accepted John’s proposal I said to him ,what we will do besides have the best wetsuit on the market, is do it very differently. So instead of having 3 or 4 versions of a wetsuit from cheap to the best , we will just do one. Make it the very best and put out at a fairer price. We also intend to do the same with Sleeveless- trisuit and Fast Skin, but first we have to start the ball rolling with the V-Force VIII. I must say at this stage that John Vorgias has also wanted me to use the best materials available, and has not rushed or cut corners. He does the same QA with all his Vorgee swim wear and goggles as well , and he is an Aussie.

I am very proud of what I have achieved with the V-Force VIII for Vorgee , and hope that athletes can see the huge benefits of this wetsuit, with out paying $1000- $1300 for a great wetsuit ( RRP for the V-Force VIII $799 )

	Hey Everyone,

I've got some friends new to triathlon and they are stepping up to clip on bars on their road bikes to ride in an aero position. In my day, most handlebars were AL but and it was considered a real no-no to put clip ons on carbon bars.

I am sure AL bars are a thing of the past, and my friends bikes all have carbon bars so....

Is it OK to put clip on bars on carbon road handle bars?

Is there a danger of crushing, weakening or otherwise breaking the carbon when tightening the clamps?

If so, how do I get a decent friction fit to prevent the bars from moving from bumps etc? (I remember how scary it was back in the day when I hit a pot hole and the bars dropped suddenly!!)

I would really appreciate any help on this, thanks!

After a long discussion with the police today it has unfortunately become clear that I am not going to get the approval to run any ATTA events at Calga. The requirements set down by the police and the council will mean that I will need to increase from 1 traffic controller to 5 controllers from an accredited company and that I will also need to obtain road occupancy certificates for each event. These requirements are financially unviable so unless I can come up with some alternative we are not going to run in 2020. I have reset the March event to draft in order to hide it from your calendar. I have contacted Buncheur to organise a refund for those who have already entered.

I sincerely apologise to all of the riders who have enjoyed ATTA for such a long time.

At the moment I am pretty gutted

Big news for Townsville. Multisport World Titles in 2021, presumably this would be aquathlon, cross-tri, long distance, etc

Getting in early with a thread. I just signed up last night for my first full distance - Cairns in 2020. Likely the last chance I have to do an IM before I hit the big 4-0! I'm really hoping that 8 months is enough time to train!

Anyone want to point me in the direction of good advice of where to stay? I've heard the logistics of Cairns can be annoying. Preferably I'd like a place where my partner can have a good time as well and I guess be close to the finish!

Good to hear there is an actual event happening now, at minimum it should put pressure on Ironman to step up the treatment of pros.

but I can’t figure out the layout of the event - it seems they will have 3 teams, and 3 reps from the teams start a mini race within a race, with a new trio starting every 10 minutes, with each mini race getting points allocation, most points wins?? I really don’t know how that will play out on tv, seems very messy.

why not just have a flat out shootout over middle distance with the best in the world racing for a slice of the $2mill prize purse??

It's elites only now and the 38,000 average Joe's are done. They're trying to get a hold of that virus and crossing their fingers that the Olympics can still go ahead. A girl I coach is devastated and pretty upset at the minute which is how I found out.

Warning: cathartic, self indulgent post follows

Today marks exactly 1 year since my father (Reg) passed away. A few days after the funeral we were at mum's place sorting out his belongings and a small, Red Cross booklet caught my eye. It listed the dates he'd donated blood and I was staggered by just how many entries there were. Kinda spookily, the very first day he'd donated was June 5, 1945 - my daughter was born on June 5, 1998 - seemed like an omen.

He'd been actively donating blood for over 50 years. They reckon each blood donation can save up to 3 lives so it would seem my old man was nothing short of a miracle man. We're talking hundreds of people he could have saved.

Couldn't understand how anyone could do this - since first fainting from a needle at age nine I'd pretty much been a needle hater all my life. To voluntarily lay an arm out for a needle just didn't register with me as sane. The height of my irrational fear came when I had 4 stitches in a head cut without anesthetic because I didn't want the local.

Every time I looked at this book it made me remember how selfless he was - he was the sort of man who would give you the shirt off his back, even if it was his only shirt. It often reduced me to tears which was a bit strange, as that didn't happen when he died.

So to cut a long story short today, 12 months to the day after he died, I walked into the Red Cross Blood Collection Centre in Clarence St in an effort to honor my father. The first question I was asked in the interview was "So why did you decide to give blood" which immediately reduced me to a sniveling wreck. It drained every bit of energy to blurt out 'I'm doing it for Reg' and she clearly understood this was not going to be easy. She glanced at my pocket where Dad's book was giving me moral support. As she took my ever rising blood pressure I could feel the emotion bleeding from every pore - this was emotionally killing me. We waited for a few minutes to get the BP down and headed into the waiting room where 'Sally' came and looked after me.

After undergoing quite a few surgeries I don't faint anymore - a fact I'm sure Sally appreciated. The procedure really was relatively painless but I still mindlessly babbled to keep my mind off what was happening. Sally listened intently - far more intently than I deserved. As much as I wanted to tell her why I was there, just the thought of my dad left me paralysed to the core. When it was over I walked into the 'recovery' area and had the worst banana milkshake of my life.

If you've given blood in the past you're probably thinking HTFU buttercup! But for me this wasn't just about giving blood, this was about doing something of which dad would have been proud. I've done a lot of things in my life but none have made me as proud as leaving 500 ml of red at the counter today. I've decided every November 10 whilst I'm able, I'm going to line up again. And for the heck of it, June 5 sounds like a good date too.

If you've never donated blood, give it a shot. Be selfless, help others. And if they ask you why you've decided to donate, tell them you're "doing it for Reg".

Hey everyone. I was interested to see if anyone on the forum has actively dropped all or most Dairy products from their diet, especially if coming from a diet that contained a lot of dairy, ie a big change. If so, did you notice any change or experience anything different? Not necessarily talking lactose tolerance or a dairy allergy - just people making a diet change.
